Lake City Girls Defeat Defending Champs
Lindsay Herbert’s third run batted in brought home Christina Johnson in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday as Lake City (1-1) edged visiting Lakeland 4-3 in a non-league softball game at Coeur d’Alene.
Johnson walked, reached second on a wild pitch, then scored on Herbert’s single. Courtney Zimmerman (1-1) pitched six scoreless innings against the defending State A-2 champions.
The Hawks (0-1) led 2-1 in the second, courtesy of a pair of Timberwolves errors.
Sarah Ballinger allowed one earned run in her second starting assignment and Kelli Babcock had a two-run double during a five-run sixth as visiting Coeur d’Alene beat Kennewick 6-3 in the opener of a non-league doubleheader.
Kennewick (2-1) held the Vikings (1-4) to three hits in the second game and won 4-1.
Baseball
Joe Wagner and Ben Johnston had three RBIs apiece as visiting Coeur d’Alene beat Pasco 16-14 to complete a sweep of a non-league doubleheader.
Scott Ross (1-0) pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the 6-4 opener. Ross struck out seven and allowed no earned runs.
Brian Van Hoose and Rex Anderson had RBI singles during a four-run second as visiting Lake City beat Lewis and Clark 7-5 in a non-leaguer at Hart Field.
Andy Cohen added an RBI double in the third for the victorious Timberwolves.
Boys soccer
Scott Blodgett’s assist and goal in the second half put the final touches on Lake City’s 4-0 North Idaho League win over visiting Lakeland.
The Timberwolves are 2-0.
Nick Reynolds scored three goals within a 12-minute span of the first half to help Cheney to a 5-1 win over visiting Deer Park/Riverside in a Frontier League boys opener.
Paul Malisani of the Blackhawks (1-1, 1-0) assisted on Reynolds’ first two goals. Mark Zinheart scored with 3 minutes left for DP/R (0-2, 0-1).
