Newport-Metaline Crowned Best Among Division I Trapshooters

The Newport-Metaline team stood up to the blizzard last Saturday to win the shoot-off at the Spokane Gun Club for the Division I team championship in the 1997 Spokesman-Review Trapshoot.

Winter weather was a factor each Sunday during the eight weeks of the shoot, which is in its 78th year. But last Saturday’s weather was possibly the worst.

“Bitter cold winds drove the thickly falling snow horizontally into the gunners hands, necks and faces,” said Bob Miller, Spokane Gun Club spokesman. “Several shooters withdrew or quit shooting somewhere in the middle of the 100-bird singles.”

Winners of other shoot-offs were Floyd Williams of Wallace-Kellogg for the Class B champion of champions, Doug Heise of Chewelah for the Class D honors and Tina Keller of Pomeroy for the women’s division champion of champions.

The Spokesman-Review Trapshoot begins each year on the second Sunday in January. Teams shoot at their own clubs, but compete against teams in other towns by mailing their scores to the newspaper for publication each week.
