Dollar Ends Mostly Higher
The dollar recovered from early weakness against the yen to end mostly higher Monday, strengthening on expectations that U.S. interest rates will rise and on news suggesting Japan may impose more domestic taxes.
Many currency traders were betting the Federal Reserve’s policymaking committee would nudge up short-term interest rates by 25 basis points or a quarter percentage point to 5.50 percent at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday. Higher U.S. rates tend to make dollar-denominated assets worth more.
