‘Radiant Object’ Exhibit Opens At Museum

Suzanne Pate Correspondent

The new exhibit at the Cheney Cowles Museum, titled “The Radiant Object: Self-taught Artists from the Volkersz Collection,” opens with a reception from 5-9 p.m. tonight.

Willem Volkersz will discuss his collection at 7:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium.

The exhibit features 70 paintings, sculptures and other creations belonging to Volkersz, a Montana artist.

In the accompanying catalog, Volkersz explains he selected these pieces because each “radiates something personal and unique.”

The exhibition continues through June 1.

Three Wednesday night programs are scheduled during the show’s run:

April 2: Chris Sublett, folk art collector and art professor at Eastern Washington University.

April 23: Barbara Racker, curator of art at CCM, “From Lee Steen to Ferdinand Cheval: The Universal Tradition of Outsider Environments.”

May 14: Jim Christy, author and videographer of “Strange Sites: Uncommon Homes and Gardens in the Pacific Northwest.”

The museum, 2316 W. First, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults; $3 over age 65; $2.50 for children age 6-16; $10 per family; half-price on Wednesdays.

See next Thursday’s IN Life section for a full preview of Volkersz’s exhibit.
