The Chicago Cubs gave Kevin Tapani an $11 million, three-year contract to be their No. 2 starting pitcher. On Friday they announced he’s having surgery and could miss the first two months of the season.
Tapani, signed to compensate for the loss of Jaime Navarro, will have surgery next week to repair a sprained ligament in his right index finger.
Although Brady Anderson wants to play with a cracked rib on opening day, Baltimore probably will put him on the disabled list. Anderson has a crack in the fifth rib on his left side.
Mark McGwire, who has missed seven games this spring because of a sore back, hopes to rejoin Oakland for Sunday’s exhibition game against San Diego at Las Vegas. McGwire, sent to the Bay Area Wednesday to receive a cortisone shot, was doubtful for today’s game against San Francisco at the Oakland Coliseum.
Right-hander Barry Manuel was traded from the Montreal Expos to the New York Mets for cash.
Manuel was 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in nine spring-training games. He was 4-1 last year with a 3.24 ERA in 53 appearances.
