Pair Beaten In Gang Initiation

Two men were beaten at a North Side home by gang members in a violent initiation ritual, police said Sunday.

The attack occurred Friday night. The victims, ages 19 and 22, said they wanted to leave when they learned a female friend wasn’t at her home in the 1000 block of West Maxwell.

But, they said, six men at the residence refused to let them go and threatened to shoot them if they didn’t join the gang.

The two men agreed to join the gang because they were afraid, then were punched and kicked repeatedly, police said.

Afterward, the victims escaped through a rear window and called police.

Officers arrested Mel E. Williams, 22, of Spokane, on suspicion of felony harassment and third-degree assault.
