Bullpups Head Toward Playoffs

Gonzaga Prep took a big step toward the playoffs Wednesday with a 1-0 win over visiting Mead in Greater Spokane League boys soccer.

The Bullpups scored the winner when Spencer Leonard chipped a pass to the far post, where Pat Webinger headed it over the goalkeeper.

G-Prep (3 regulation wins, 1 overtime win, 0 overtime losses, 3 regulation losses) began the day with eight points, tied for fourth place with four teams. The top five qualify for district playoffs.

Beating Mead (3-1-0-3) gave Prep three points and created a four-way tie for third place. Idle Lewis and Clark (13 points) is in second place, but ends the regular season against champion Ferris.

The GSL season concludes Saturday with four matches at Albi Stadium: North Central vs. University at 11 a.m.; G-Prep vs. Shadle Park at 1 p.m.; Mead vs. Rogers at 3; and LC-Ferris at 5.

A tiebreaker, if needed, will be at 4 p.m. Monday at a neutral site.

The first round of the district playoffs is at 3 p.m. Wednesday. No. 5 will be at No. 2, and No. 4 at No. 3 in loser-out matches. Ferris has a district bye until May 13.

Shadle’s Kris Walters scored his seventh goal and assisted on Charlie Howlett’s score. Shadle dropped from fourth place to seventh.

Josh Melcher scored his fifth goal and added two assists, including a pass from the right corner that Hatcher headed in. U-Hi had just seven goals in six previous GSL matches. Eight Titans had goals. Five of those eight hadn’t scored in league play.

U-Hi has lost to Mead and G-Prep in shoot-outs, so a win Saturday over NC appears imperative.

The night match was unreported. Ferris has already clinched the league title. With a loss, CV (2-0-2-3, 8) would be eliminated from the playoffs because its regular season is finished.
