Ferris’ Nicole Westhaver Meets With Nation’s Leaders

Nicole Westhaver, a student at Ferris High School, recently participated in the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program in Washington, D.C. Nicole was one of 300 students chosen to participate in a week of meetings with government leaders and learn about the democratic process.

She was one of 20 students nationally to receive a scholarship to attend the conference.

Ferris High School surpassed 18 other high schools to take the top three places of a recent Eastern Washington Regional Science Olympiad competition.

Collectively, the three Ferris teams won 23 medals - nine gold, eight silver and six bronze - and advanced to the state competition at Eastern Washington University.

The first-place team members are Ryan Bentz, Ryan Cassidy, Emily Chong, Bruce Fatz, Zach Frazier, Dan Guderjohn, Kirk Lennstrom, Brandon Matthew, Marla Meekhof, Jessica Narolski, Michael Ross, Scott Siera and Brent Streich.

The second-place team members are Stephanie Bostwick, Patty Chen, Katie Dubois, Monica Durkin, Nick Elison, Lauren Hoernlein, Brooke Kempner, Jeff Kromm, Morgan Mattfeldt, Jennifer Oh and Cynthia Wallace.

The third place team members are Michelle Blevins, Dusin DeVleming, Lincoln Ellis, Loren Erickson, Jake Fuget, Maren Gulsrud, Natalie Gulsrud, Ryan McCarthy, Dio Morales, Danica Praza, Joslin Streich and Marian Thorpe.

Nine members of Spokane Community College’s Environmental Science Building Ag Technology Club received placement at the National Postsecondary Student Competition in Ohio last March.

They had earned the right to represent Washington by faring well in two state competitions.

Those who placed in the top three positions in an event in the nation are listed by their names, hometown, placement and discipline:

Dana McCollim, Deer Park, first, Natural Resources Career Progress; Todd Iverson, Odessa, Wash., first, Ag Equip and Parts Retailing Career Planning; Wes Suksdorf, Spangle, second, Cereal Crop Production Career Planning; Lori Somerlott, Oldtown, Idaho, second, Specialized Animal Production Career Planning; Jerry Kane, Fairfield, second, Specialized Crop Production Career Planning; Erin Elliott, Deer Park, third, Natural Resources Employment Interview Contest; Pat Kane, Fairfield, and Justin Weidemann, Spokane, third, both in the State Sheep Team Livestock contest; and Erin Elliott, third, State Swine Team Livestock contest.

John Tillison, Spokane, was elected vice president of the national organization.
