Veitch, Warriors Put Brakes On Cougs’ Winning Streak
John Veitch allowed just three hits in pitching Lewis-Clark State to a 16-4 baseball win over visiting Washington State on Wednesday evening at Harris Field, snapping the Cougars’ eight-game winning streak.
The win also gave the Warriors a sweep of their seven games against WSU this spring.
L-C State broke open a 5-2 contest by sending 14 batters to the plate in an eight-run fourth inning. The Warriors were aided by five walks and two hit batsmen, but also got a two-run double from Tristan Fike and a two-run single from Elliott Strankman.
Veitch (4-1) worked seven innings and struck out seven. Starter Marcus Glaze (0-2) took the loss for WSU (13-34), which got a second-inning home run from Casey Kelly.
WSU’s Curtis Robinson has been named Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division Player of the Week after hitting .526 (10 for 19), scoring five runs and batting in six in the Cougars’ midweek win over Whitworth and five-game weekend sweep of Pac-10 foe Portland State.
The senior infielder, from Longview, posted a slugging percentage of .737 for the week.
Blue Mountain clubs CCS
Visiting Blue Mountain pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of three Community Colleges of Spokane errors to hand the Eastern Division-leading Sasquatch a 9-2 NWAACC baseball setback.
Blue Mountain (12-12, 10-7) scored single runs in each of the first four innings and then exploded for five in the top of the seventh to complete the rout of CCS (14-13, 11-6).
Whitworth washed out
Whitworth’s home doubleheader against Whitman was postponed because of rain.
The teams will attempt to make up the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges games May 11.
Hall of Fame Game tabs Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings will start the 1997 NFL preseason July 26 in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
The game, held the same day as the Hall of Fame inductions in Canton, Ohio, will be the first of three that day in the 64-game preseason schedule unveiled by the league.
Green Bay will host Miami, and Denver will host the Chicago Bears in the other opening-day games.
