Duval Grabs Lead
David Duval, in his third full year on the PGA Tour and still in search of his first victory, opened with a 7-under-par 65 for a two-stroke lead in the Houston Open.
The 25-year-old Duval, a runner-up this year at Pebble Beach who finished third in this tournament a year ago, started with four pars. Then he made birdies on seven of his next 12 holes.
Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot a 73.
At Daytona Beach, Fla., a new putter and new shafts produced better results for Tammie Green, who shot a 6-under-par 66 for the first-round lead in the Sprint Titleholders Championship. Green made five of her seven birdie putts from at least 15 feet. Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, opened with a 74.
Former Masters and PGA Championship winner Henry Picard, who won 26 tournaments on the PGA Tour, died at age 90 in Charleston, S.C.
