Driver, Passenger Are Hospitalized

From Staff And Wire Reports

A man was in critical condition Sunday after crashing his car on state Highway 291 in Stevens County, authorities said.

Gerald Spinelli, 41, of Spokane, lost control of his car late Saturday night on a curve while traveling south on the highway three miles west of Tum Tum, the Washington State Patrol said.

The Ford sedan veered across the highway, striking rocks on the side of the road, the WSP said.

Spinelli’s passenger, Art Tatum, 46, of Spokane, was injured, according to troopers.

Both men were transported to Deaconess Medical Center. Spinelli is being treated for head and internal injuries, and a broken femur and ankle.

Tatum was listed in serious condition Sunday with a crushed chest, ruptured spleen and broken arm, troopers said.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt, the WSP said.
