Derby Winner Silver Charm Tosses Rider

Associated Press

Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm caused some anxious moments Thursday when he threw his exercise rider.

During his morning workout, Silver Charm threw Larry Damore and ran for more than 100 yards before being caught by track outrider Bill Rudolph. Silver Charm was unhurt.

Damore was riding Silver Charm on a 1-1/2-mile training gallop. He said the colt got spooked by the shadow of the finish line.

“I’ve been thrown from a Breeders’ Cup winner and an Eclipse Award winner, but until today I’d never been thrown by a Kentucky Derby winner,” Damore said.

Trainer Bob Baffert took the mishap calmly.

“You can’t let stuff like this get to you,” Baffert said.
