Mead Picks Off Third Title

In emphatic style, Mead won its third Greater Spokane League baseball title Thursday.

Rob Elmer threw five shutout innings and Sam Hess batted in six runs during the Panthers’ 25-2 win over visiting Rogers. The victory, coupled with a loss by Ferris (9-5), gave the Panthers (12-3) the title they also won in 1988 and ‘95.

Mead’s hitting attack included: Elmer, 3 for 4 with three RBIs; Hess, five runs and a three-run triple; Grant Reeves, four RBIs for a league-record 44 (31 was the former mark); Brandon Muzatko, a bases-loaded double and five RBIs; Adam Strate, 3 for 3 with three runs; and Seth Winterer, 3 for 4 with five runs.

Mead automatically moves on to the Region IV tournament at a Big Nine Conference site. The Panthers will play for seeding May 20 against the District 8-AAA tournament survivor.

Rogers (6-8) is tied with Gonzaga Prep for sixth place, the final district spot, with two GSL games left.
