G-Prep Duo Pulls Upset En Route To Semifinal Spot

Alli Powers and Krista Kubiak of Gonzaga Prep scored the biggest upset during Friday’s opening round of the 52nd Inland Empire high school tennis tournament.
Powers/Kubiak began the tourney with a 7-5, 6-4 win over top-seeded Libby Marble and Sarah Therrien of West Valley (Yakima) in girls doubles at Mission Park.
The G-Prep duo won twice more to advance to today’s semifinals at Central Valley vs. fourth-seeded Sarah Ullah and Shannon Urza of Richland. Second-seeded Katie Watts and Megan McKitterick of Ferris are in the other semi.
All of today’s matches move to CV. The tourney opens at 8 a.m., with finals expected around noon.
In boys singles at Ferris, two-time defending champion John Gruber of Ellensburg advanced to today’s final with a 6-0, 6-1 win over third-seeded Kyle Steiling of Kamiakin. Gruber lost just seven games in four matches.
Second-seeded Ryan Moran of Mead, who met Gruber in last year’s title match, plays Medical Lake’s Josh Greene today in a semifinal. Greene beat fourth-seeded Spencer Piston of Lewis and Clark 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
All four seeds made the semis in girls singles at Shadle Park. Top-seeded Katherine Martin of Kamiakin, last year’s runner-up, beat Kennewick’s Brooklynn Gregorich 6-2, 6-3 in the quarters. Martin will meet third-seeded Jamie Taylor of Hanford. Ferris’ Darcy Ruemping, fourth-seeded, will meet Richland’s Lyndsey Nott, the second seed, in the other semi.
The top two seeds in boys doubles at Hart Field advanced to today’s semis. Mead’s No. 1-seeded Brett Kaiser and Tory Gambill beat Kennewick’s Mike Foster and Ethan Owen 6-2, 6-1 in the quarters. Kaiser played on the doubles title team last year. Kaiser/Gambill will meet Ferris’ Nick Mays and Josh Dyk.
Second-seeded Michael Cook and Tyler Kempton of West Valley (Yakima) beat LC’s Joe Harris and Trevor Ashenbrenner 6-1, 6-0 in the quarters. Kempton played on last year’s runner-up team.
In mixed doubles at CV, second-seeded Anna Adolphson and Ben Maixner of LC are the lone remaining seeded team. Kamiakin’s Kellie Geris and Mark Watson knocked off top-ranked Janelle Moore and Nick Dupuis of Richland 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarters.
A quarterfinal match between Clarkston’s Emmylou Teitzel and Bob Burrus, and North Central’s Sarah Menard and Josh Stowell was moved to 7 a.m. today. The winner meets Adolphson/Maixner.
