Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: I read an article in your column about saving the whole newspaper on the day your children are born.

I just had a baby and I saved the paper. My question is, what is the best way for me to keep it in good shape for many years? - A.B., Dallas

First, congratulations on your new addition. Now, on to the paper query.

It’s best to store the newspaper flat in a large box that has been lined with acid-free paper. Don’t store any metal objects or other things with it. Don’t store it in the basement or attic due to extreme heat or cold and moisture, and it’s best to keep it out of sunlight, so a dark, dry closet is ideal.

We checked with our local public library and they said the newspaper should keep for years to come when stored this way. - Heloise

Dear Heloise: If you folks out there love a lot of potted plants outside, recycle the clear plastic container that pastries come in.

Just separate the top from the bottom and it works great to catch the water when watering the plants. - T. Balliet, San Clemente, Calif.

We recycle the plastic containers from frozen dinners here in our office for the same reason. - Heloise
