Slash Ends Sundstrom’s Season
New York Rangers right wing Niklas Sundstrom will miss the rest of the playoffs after breaking his left arm in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals with the New Jersey Devils, coach Colin Campbell said.
Sundstrom was injured in the final 3 minutes of the Rangers’ 3-0 win, when Devils right wing John MacLean slashed the 22-year-old, who has five assists in nine playoff games. MacLean’s hit went unpenalized but is being reviewed by NHL vice president Brian Burke. He’s expected to rule on the incident by Sunday.
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Uwe Krupp will miss the remainder of the playoffs with a back injury, the team said.
Krupp, 31, who scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in triple overtime against the Florida Panthers last year, hasn’t played since March 26 because of a bulging disc and pinched nerve in his back. Team doctors have recommended surgery.
The San Jose Sharks fired head coach Al Sims after one season on the job.
The Sharks posted a 27-47-8 record under Sims, second-worst to the Boston Bruins’ 26-47-9 mark. San Jose finished last in the Pacific Division for the second consecutive season.
