Ferris Boys, CV Girls Take Strandberg Titles

Isaac Hawkins, Tyrone Asterino and the 400-meter relay team won Saturday as Ferris’ boys edged West Valley by onehalf point at the Strandberg invitational track and field meet at Central Valley.

Hawkins, defending State AAA champion in the 1,600 and 3,200, won the mile in 4 minutes, 14.06 seconds. Asterino ran 14.69 to win the 110 hurdles, beating 300 hurdles champ David Stoddard of Waterville. The 400 relay finished in 43.72.

Ferris scored 64 points, WV 63.5. The host Bears were third (58), and Shadle Park and West Valley (Yakima) tied for fourth (57) in the 29-team field.

CV handily won the girls meet with 90 points, 20 more than WV (Yakima) in the 26-team field. WV, with 65, took third.

CV winners were Whitney Schmaljohn, 100, 11.98; Stephanie Crace, 200, 25.66; the 400 relay, 49.00; and the 1,600 relay, 4:04.92.

Boys double winners were Ricardo Colon of Pullman and Stoddard.

Colon ran 10.73 in the 100, well ahead of Colfax’s Anthony Haynes (11.08), and long-jumped 22 feet, 1 inch.

Stoddard won the 200 (22.27) and 300 hurdles (38.20), and timed 14.93 in his runner-up finish in the high hurdles.

Riverside’s Jon Ashcraft placed second in the mile (4:23.31) and high jump (6-4). Ryan Schroder, 6-5 in the high jump, was WV’s lone winner.

On the girls’ side, Alison Eldridge of WV (Yakima) was a triple winner. She won both hurdles (15.03, 45.59) and the triple jump in 34-10.

Third-place WV won the 800 relay (1:46.50), placed second in the 400 relay and earned runner-up points from Staci Adams in the 100.

Fourth-place University piled up points with wins in the high jump (Tanya Walker, 5-3) and long jump (Kalie Cossette, 16-9).

Ferris owned the distances, with Jennifer Smith’s 4:58.41 leading the mile and Emily Hawkins’ 11:24.45 topping the 3,200. Chewelah’s Deanne Perkins was second to Eldridge in both hurdles (15.55, 47.08).
