Calendar watch

Sometimes the May weather’s so gentle we forget the all-important planting date: May 15 is officially the first frost-free day in this area so it’s now safe to plant all annuals and not have to worry about covering them every night. Of course, sometimes Mother Nature surprises us.

Who doesn’t like lilacs?

Since this is the Lilac City, it seems a shame if we didn’t give an extra nod to these traditional fragrant flowers.

And what would be more fitting as a prelude to the Lilac Parade Saturday night than a tour of the lilacs at either Manito Park or Finch Arboretum. The lilac area at Manito is just south of the duck pond; in Finch Arboretum, well, just follow your nose to the fragrant shrubs.

What’s in a name?

Call it address envy. Many people whose homes are just outside neighborhoods with prestigious mailing addresses will do anything - beg, try and bribe letter carriers or go to court - to claim that address for their own, the Wall Street Journal says.

In addition to the prestige, homes in such neighorhoods can command as much as 70 percent more than similar homes only a couple of miles away.
