Huskies Win Pac-10 Baseball Crown

From Wire Reports

Jamie Porter’s two-run double was the deciding hit in Washington’s 12-9 come-from-behind victory over Stanford to win the Pac-10 baseball championship Saturday.

The Huskies took the best-of-3 series, although both teams already have received automatic bids to the 48-team NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced Monday.

Washington (43-18) trailed 9-8 after six innings but rallied for three runs in the seventh, two of them on Porter’s double. The center fielder moved to third on the throw to the plate and then scored on an error by Stanford catcher Jon Schaeffer.

Ryan Soules, who was 4 for 5, hit a solo homer in the eighth to cap Washington’s scoring.

Tony Schrager’s homer in the second was Stanford’s 93rd home run of the year, tying the school record for the single-season mark set in 1990.

Reliever Blair Fowler picked up the victory and Bryan Williamson worked the final three innings to earn his fifth save. Tony Cogan took the loss for Stanford (38-19).

Now it is up to the NCAA committee to decide whether the Cardinal is still deserving of a No. 1 seed. There are only a couple of obvious openings and few teams to fill them. Auburn could be one. Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and Tennessee are others, but they made early exits from their conference tournaments.

Stanford still might get a No. 1 seed by default.

“I can’t control that in any way,” Stanford coach Mark Marquess said. “What can I do? They give us what they will. We take what we get.”
