Amateur Takes Washington Open Associated Press

Keith Coleman of Mukilteo became the seventh amateur to win the Washington Open golf tournament on Wednesday.

He had to birdie the final hole to hold off defending champion Jeff Coston of Blaine by one stroke.

The 27-year-old Coleman, who took a three-shot lead into the final round, closed with a 71 for a 206 total, 10 under par for 54 holes on the 6,590-yard Tacoma Country and Golf Club course.

Coston, who was six shots back going into the final round, fired a 6-under-par 66 for 207. He pulled even with Coleman by sinking a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 final hole. However, Coleman hit his 6-iron approach shot to 20 feet, narrowly missed an eagle of his own, then tapped in a birdie putt.

Coston collected the $7,000 top professionals’ check from the $68,000 purse.

Spokane’s top finisher, David Christenson, was at 220.
