Kringen Sparks Huskies

Associated Press

Fast-starting Washington held on to defeat Southwestern Louisiana 5-4 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Mideast Regional in Stark ville, Miss., giving starting pitcher Jake Kringen his 11th straight victory.

Washington (44-18) led 5-0 after two innings, when both leadoff hitters reached on errors and eventually scored. The Huskies, who won for the 14th time in 15 games, then sent just 24 batters the final seven innings against Southwestern Louisiana’s Trey Polland.

Kringen (11-2) allowed four runs - two unearned in a wild sequence in the fifth inning - on seven hits over 6 innings. In setting a single-season Washington record for pitching victories, the left-hander struck out six and walked four.

Bryan Williamson, a right-hander who returned May 10 after missing three weeks with a bruised shoulder, pitched 2 shutout innings for his sixth save.

Southwestern Louisiana (43-17), which is 14-2 in one-run games this season, pulled within 5-4 in the fifth inning off Kringen.

The Ragin’ Cajuns were unable to score any more, and unable to back up the pitching by Polland (12-5), who struck out nine and walked none in the complete-game effort. He allowed five runs, just two earned, on eight hits.
