Iml Squads Will Play Off For State Bid

For a second year in a row, the Intermountain League will go into overtime to decide its state football runner-up playoff berth.

St. Maries (7-2), Priest River (7-2) and Moscow (4-5) - all of which lost to league champ Lakeland and had at least one loss among themselves - will meet in Rathdrum Tuesday evening in a District I-II mini playoff to settle things.

Awaiting the winner is Snake River Valley League champion Weiser.

The playoff will begin at 7 p.m. A coin flip will be held at 6 to decide which team will have a bye and which teams will face off first.

Play will begin at the defensive team’s 40-yard line. The team on offense continues until it scores or loses possession by fumble, interception or failure to gain a first down. The team on defense will then take its turn on offense. The team with the most points after the session is the winner.

If no winner is decided, play continues from the 20-yard line. If there is no winner after the second round of possessions, there will be a third series, beginning from the 10. If there still is no winner, each subsequent series will begin at the 10 until a winner is declared.

The winner of the first playoff will take on the team that had a bye. That playoff will begin about 20 minutes after the first-round matchup.

Admission will be charged. Cost is $2 for adults, $1 for students.

During the regular season, Priest River beat St. Maries 7-6; Moscow beat Priest River 23-7; and St. Maries beat Moscow 39-27.

State cross country

The Bonners Ferry boys fell short of their goal of a state title, but they still had a respectable finish Saturday in the meet at Buhl.

The Badgers finished fourth, up three spots from a year ago. The team placing was omitted from Sunday’s section. The Bonners Ferry trio of Josh Sherven, Jarred Ekstrom and Winter Bradenen took 12th, 19th and 20th respectively. The top 20 received medals.

Bonners Ferry’s Lany Dowell finished 18th.

State soccer

No report was received from area teams Saturday.

Boise’s boys and girls captured the State A-1 titles. Boise’s boys defeated Meridian 1-0 and Boise’s girls topped Skyline 7-3.

Sandpoint’s boys finished third by topping Lake City 4-3. Sandpoint’s girls also took third place. The Bulldogs earned a 1-0 decision over Centennial.

State A-4 volleyball

Falls Christian fared much better than North Star League teams typically do at state last weekend.

The Eagles (15-4) won their opening-round match Friday, defeating Greenleaf Friends 16-14, 15-6. But FCA fell in the second round to eventual state champion and powerful Troy 15-3, 15-0.

In a loser-out match Saturday, FCA was eliminated by Cambridge 15-3, 15-11.
