Daniel Leads WSU
College basketball
Senior Carlos Daniel scored a game-high 30 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots Sunday as Washington State University defeated Hungary Select 90-79 in a men’s exhibition game at Pullman.
Daniel converted 13 of 18 shots from the field and 4 of 6 free throw attempts. Teammate Chris Crosby, a sophomore, scored 16 points with the help of four 3-pointers in four tries. Senior Rodrigo de la Fuente contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.
Marvin Ricks led Hungary Select with 26 points. Ricks hit five 3-point baskets.
Daniel scored 15 points to help WSU move out to a 46-38 halftime lead. The Cougars shot 57.6 percent before the intermission.
Only seven scholarship players played for WSU. Blake Pengelly, who has a bone chip in his left hand, Will Hutchens and Kojo Mensah-Bonsu missed the game with injuries. Hutchens is recovering from a sprained ankle. Mensah-Bonsu is recovering from arthroscopic surgery.
Vandals lose exhibition
New University of Idaho men’s basketball coach Dave Farrar was almost apologetic.
“It couldn’t have been an enjoyable game to watch, it couldn’t have been an enjoyable game to cover, but I will say we are better than that,” Farrar said after his Vandals debuted with a 69-54 exhibition loss to Next Level Sports in Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.
Point guard Avery Curry, a transfer from Florida State who sat out last season, was rusty in his initial UI outing. He scored 10 points, but needed two baskets in the final 60 seconds to finish 4 of 20 from the field. North Idaho College transfer Cameron Banks scored 11 points.
