Canucks Fire Renney, Name Keenan New Coach
The Vancouver Canucks announced Thursday that Mike Keenan will replace Tom Renney and will coach the Canucks in Anaheim tonight.
Keenan has been out of hockey for more than a year and the move would reunite him with Mark Messier. The two helped the New York Rangers win a Stanley Cup title in 1994.
The change came the morning after the Canucks (4-13-2) ended a club-record 10-game losing streak.
Renney was in his second year as Vancouver coach. The team missed the playoffs last season.
Nashville, the NHL’s next member, due to hit the ice in October 1998, announced the name of the team will be the Predators.
