George M. Katahira Spokane

Memorial service for George M. Katahira, 89, will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Highland Park United Methodist Church. Private interment will be held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Katahira, who lived most of his life in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He was sent to live with his family in Japan at the age of five to attend schools, and work in the rice field and silkworm farm.

After eight years, he returned to Spokane, where he started working at age 15 at a car yard in Hillyard for the Great Northern Railway, in what was called the “Japanese Camp.”

After 11 months he switched to the old roundhouse and in 1954 transferred to the diesel shop and retired as a boilermaker in 1973.

Mr. Katahira was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and the Japanese American Citizen League.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Miyoko Betty; two sons, Bruce Katahira of Spokane and Robert Katahira of Seattle; a daughter, Joyce Ota of Spokane; a brother, Ken Katahira of Chicago; three sisters, Toyo Matsunaga of Sacramento, Calif., Mary Kunitake of Los Angeles and Hiroko Matsuura of Japan; and five grandchildren.

Francis ‘Frank’ Fadness Hayden, Idaho , Memorial service for Francis K. “Frank” Fadness, 78, will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Fadness, who was born in North Dakota, died Wednesday.

He served in the Air Force for 10 years, before working as a machinist in San Jose, Calif.

Mr. Fadness retired in 1982 and moved to Hayden.

He was a member of the Pop Tops and Summer Survivors Bowling Leagues.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Darlene; a son, Larry Fadness of California; two stepsons, Thomas Pierce and David Pierce, both of Coeur d’Alene; six brothers, Milton, Melbourne, Vern and Stan Fadness, all of Montana, Ray Fadness of Sunnyside, Wash., and Wilbur Fadness of Oregon; a sister, Maisie Petri of Hamilton, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Elliott Spokane

Visitation for Myrtle Edna Elliott, 88, will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Elliott, who was born in Sanders, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She tended Nubian goats, which provided milk to numerous people.

Mrs. Elliott was a lifetime member of the American Dairy Goat Association and was an active judge for goat shows throughout the area. She was also a member of the Inter-State Dairy Goat Producers Club.

Her first husband, Dallas Grasty, and her second husband, Hilbert Elliott, both preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sisters, Helen Mollendorf of Spokane and Irma Mercer of Othello, Wash.

Isabel Carmichael Spokane

Memorial service for Isabel K. Carmichael, 87, will be at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Mrs. Carmichael, who was born in Marlin, Wash., died Monday.

She moved to the Spokane area in 1928 and graduated from Cheney High School.

Mrs. Carmichael also graduated from Kinman Business College and then worked for the Federal Land Bank as a secretary.

She later was employed as a legal secretary.

Mrs. Carmichael was an American Field Service parent, overseeing exchange students.

She was a member of the League of Women Voters, in which she served as state secretary. She was also the First Presbyterian Church, and the Town and Country Book Club.

Her husband of 39 years, Ed Carmichael, died in 1979.

Mrs. Carmichael is survived by two sons, Jim Carmichael of Kodiak, Alaska, and Ken Carmichael of Spokane; a daughter, Kay Weeks of Hockessin, Del.; a brother, John Urquhart of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren.

Robert Brown Kellogg

Memorial service for Robert M. Brown, 55, will be held today at the Osburn (Wash.) Elementary School. A potluck buffet will follow at 6:30 p.m. with a memorial service and square dance under the direction of The Silver Valley Squares to follow at 7:30 p.m. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brown, who was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., died Wednesday.

He graduated from high school in Nebraska and later moved to Spokane.

Mr. Brown moved to the Silver Valley in 1992 from Spokane and had worked for various restaurants as a cook.

He was a member of The Silver Valley Squares.

At his request, Mr. Brown’s body was donated to the University of Idaho science department, WAMI Medical Program.

Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Drown of Ohio and Alberta Grover of Minnesota; a son, Dewey Brown of Spokane; a sister, Cherry Brown of Kansas; his companion, Barbara Tillberg of Kellogg; and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Hannah.

Ramona Jones Spokane

Funeral service for Ramona J. Jones, 72, will be at 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones, who was born in Craigmont, Idaho, died Tuesday.

She graduated from the University of Idaho with an education degree.

In 1945 she married Roger Jones in Milwaukee, Wis.

Mrs. Jones worked as an English teacher at Lewiston Senior High School for 18 years, until her retirement in 1987.

She moved to Spokane 10 years ago from Lewiston.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Dennis Jones of Troy, Mich.; a daughter, Alicia Walk of Spokane; a sister, Norma Jones of Utah; and three grandchildren.

Belvina ‘Belle’ Williamson Bertino Silverton, Idaho

Memorial service for Belvina “Belle” Williamson Bertino, 90, was held Friday. Service will be held in Culbertson, Mont., Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Clayton Memorial Chapel, with burial following at Hillside Cemetery in Culbertson. Shoshone Funeral Service was in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Bertino, who was born in Iowa, died Wednesday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Dodson, Mont., and went on to attend college in Dillon, Mont.

Mrs. Bertino became a school teacher and was also editor of the Search Light Newspaper in Culbertson. She wrote and published several books on Montana history.

She moved to the Silver Valley in 1996 and had her own web site.

Her husband, Frank, died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Frank Bertino of Silverton; two sisters, Ora Alcorn and Lyla Miller; two granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the Wallace School District No. 393 or the Culbertson School District in Montana.

Hazel Reed Kellogg

Memorial service for Hazel M. Reed, 96, will be held Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Reed, who was born in Kellogg, died Friday.

She was a lifelong Silver Valley resident and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1919.

Mrs. Reed had worked as a grocery clerk at Pat’s Grocery and Green Grocery.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Audrey Johnson in 1926 and Walter Reed in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Walter “Curly” Reed of Osburn, Idaho; two daughters, Colleen Deatley of Calgary, Alberta, and Dorothy Freeman of Kennewick; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Shoshone County Food Bank or the Kingston Baptist Church.
