Sooners Open With Sloppy Win
College basketball
Corey Brewer scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday as No. 20 Oklahoma opened its season with a sloppy 75-62 victory over Jackson State in Norman, Okla.
The Sooners shot 34 percent overall and missed their first eight shots of the second half. But Jackson State was just as bad, shooting 39 percent and never threatening after falling behind early.
Brewer, a senior guard who is Oklahoma’s top returning scorer, committed seven of the Sooners’ 22 turnovers and struggled with his shot. But so did most everyone else.
Ryan Humphrey, Oklahoma’s most celebrated recruit since Wayman Tisdale in 1982, scored 17 and had 11 rebounds in his debut. The Sooners outrebounded Jackson State, 55-31.
Trent Pullium, who led the Tigers with 14 points and eight rebounds per game last year, scored just two in the first half before finishing with 15. None of his teammates finished in double figures.
(12) Connecticut 88, Yale 57
In Hartford, Conn., Khalid El-Amin made his college basketball debut with 23 points, leading the Huskies to a drubbing of the Elis in the opener for both teams.
El-Amin finished 9 for 13 from the floor, including three 3-pointers.
Kevin Freeman scored 18 points, and Richard Hamilton 16 for the Huskies, who improved to 42-22 in the series and beat Yale for the 11th straight time.
(16) Utah 87, Fullerton 59
In Salt Lake City, Andre Miller scored 19 points as the Utes raced past the Titans in the opener for both teams.
The Utes’ starting front-court of Hanno Mottola, Alex Jensen and Michael Doleac each scored 12 points and combined for 38 boards as they dominated the smaller Titans. Utah finished with a 65-32 rebound advantage.
