Public Periscope

Compiled By Jim Camden From Staf

A faster farewell

Spokane Police Chief Terry Mangan may be leaving the city’s top cop post sooner than expected. … Mangan and City Manager Bill Pupo confirmed last week the chief is considering taking another job as early as the first of next year. … Last April, Mangan announced he planned to retire in July 1998. …

Mangan refused to discuss the job opportunity or any possible changes in his original plan. … “I’m not ready to talk,” he said, adding that when he is, he will issue a public statement.

Pupo said the chief’s early departure wouldn’t change the city’s plans to begin looking for a new chief early next year.

Manual labor

Project Vote Smart, a group that has such diverse founders as former presidential nominees Barry Goldwater and George McGovern, has an interesting way of looking at citizens. You’re the owner of your government, and you deserve a manual. … So it has created one.

“The U.S. Government: Owner’s Manual” gives job performance reports on members of Congress, explains where they got their money for their last election campaigns and shows how they have voted on key legislation. … You can get a manual free of charge by calling the Voter Research Hotline at 1-800-622-SMART.

We goofed; we’re sorry

In reporting a recent Web site of the week, “Periscope” got the all-important address wrong.

Which means if you tried to find the state library’s documents catalog on our say-so, you couldn’t. … The correct address is http://wagils.wln.com - we inadvertently inserted the almost ubiquitous “www” into the address. … One also can reach the library’s Government Information Locator Service another way: http://www.wa.gov/wsl/gils.htm. And yes, we’re sure this one has a “www.”
