Whitworth Puts Forth A Foul Effort

The Whitworth Pirates are all fouled up. And coach Warren Friedrichs says it’s time to get things straightened out.

Montana State-Northern cashed in 35 of 39 free throws Friday night to beat the Pirates 81-67 in Helena.

“We didn’t shoot great and they went to the line and hit everything,” Friedrichs said. “That may be a record for us. We put them on the line 39 times.”

By intermission, the Northern Lights (10-2) led 37-34.

Whitworth, which shot 40 percent for the game to the Lights’ 45 percent, lost one starter to fouls, had four others finish with four fouls and two with three as they committed 30 fouls to Northern’s 18.

Tyler Jordan had 13 points, Ryan Nelson 11 and Sean Weston 10 to lead the Pirates. Toby Stack had 24 points for Northern, including a perfect 16 for 16 from the free-throw line.

Whitworth plays Carroll College in Helena tonight.

CCS wins opener

Modesto Spencer scored 22 points to spark Community Colleges of Spokane to a season-opening 74-62 victory over the visiting Western Baptist junior varsity.

Spencer hit 9 of 11 2-point attempts and 1 of 4 3-pointers to lead three Sasquatch in double figures. Brian Darnold had 12 and Mike Mostek 11, 9 on 3-pointers.
