Helpful Book Simplifies Whole Process

Donna Potter Phillips The Spoke

Two things: Are you still too timid to use E-mail and surf the Net? And, do you still need a Christmas idea?

I can help with both problems.

“Netting Your Ancestors” by Cyndi Howells, and “Virtual Roots: A Guide to Genealogy and Local History on the World Wide Web” by Thomas J. Kemp, are Parts 1 and 2 to self-education in using E-mail and the Net.

“Netting Your Ancestors” not only shows how to use the Internet for genealogical research, but how to take maximum advantage of this extraordinary research tool.

The book is written by genealogist and computer whiz Cyndi Howells, creator of the award-winning Web site “Cyndi’s List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet.” It’s what you’ve been waiting for to take you by the hand and explain in terms you can understand exactly what to do and how to do it regarding genealogy trips into Internet pathways.

In an October genealogy presentation I attended, Cyndi walked on stage wearing a fuzzy bathrobe and bunny slippers, and asked, “Isn’t this the way you would all like to do genealogy? Well, you can using the Internet!”

Right she is, and her book will show you how.

“Virtual Roots” is a different sort of book, aiming not to be a how-to, but rather a road map and detailed directory providing more than 1,000 of the Internet’s best genealogy and local history sites.

Once you know how to use the Internet to do genealogy, Kemp’s book will provide the addresses of where to find information.

Divided into four sections, “General Subjects,” “United States,” “International” and “Family Associations,” the book lists the regular address and telephone number for each, plus Website addresses. In browsing, these sites caught my eye:
