Deon Luton hit three 3-pointers as Washington took command with a 16-4 run at the start of the second half on the way to a 70-61 victory over James Madison on Saturday in Seattle.
Eugene Atkinson brought James Madison within eight points three times in the final 3 minutes, but the Dukes could get no closer.
Todd MacCulloch scored 19 points for Washington (3-0), while Donald Watts added 13 and Luton, who was 3 for 7 on 3-pointers and 0-8 when trying for two points, had 12.
Atkinson scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for James Madison (1-1), with Rob Strickland scoring 12 and Lamont Boozer 11.
James Madison committed 21 turnovers and made only 4 of 13 free-throw attempts.
Neither team led by more than four points during the first 15 minutes of the game, but MacCulloch scored six as Washington closed out the first half with a 12-5 run to take a 34-27 lead.

At Tucson, Ariz., Michael Dickerson scored 20 points and the Wildcats (4-1) overcame a sloppy start to defeat the Bulldogs (2-3).
Miles Simon finished with 19 points for the defending national champs. Mike Bibby added 14, Bennett Davison 12 and A.J. Bramlett 10.
Arizona was playing for the first time since losing to No. 3 Duke in the Maui Invitational championship game Wednesday night in Hawaii. The Wildcats play Kansas on Tuesday night in Chicago.

At Anchorage, Toby Bailey scored 14 of UCLA’s final 16 points to lead a comeback victory for the Bruins (2-1) against the Blazers (3-3).
The Bruins were behind by 18 points with 14:30 left, but Bailey and Baron Davis combined for 29 points down the stretch.
Bailey finished with 28 points, Davis 22 and J.R. Henderson 21.
Willie Mitchell led the Blazers with 19 points, and Damon Cobb had 15.
Saint Mary’s 64, California 61
At Oakland, Calif., David Sivulich scored 26 points, including two game-clinching free throws with 18 seconds remaining, lifting the Gaels (2-1) over the Golden Bears (0-2).
The win by St. Mary’s broke a 14-game losing streak against Pac-10 teams dating to its 61-51 decision over Cal 61-51 in December 1987.
USC 76, San Diego St. 72
At San Diego, reserve Adam Spanich scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Trojans (4-1) over the Aztecs (1-3).
Spanich, a 6-foot-7 junior playing his first season for USC, put the Trojans ahead for good on a 3-point shot with 2:27 remaining, breaking a 63-all tie. It was one of seven successful long-range shots from the transfer from Marshalltown, Iowa, Community College.
Oregon St. 89, CS Sacramento 56
At Corvallis, Ore., Corey Benjamin scored 22 points and the Beavers (3-0) led by as many as 34 points in the first half en route to blitzing the Hornets (0-4).
Oregon State put the game away in a hurry by jumping to a 40-6 lead. By halftime, Cal State-Sacramento had more turnovers than field goals and trailed 44-12.
OSU forced 28 turnovers for the game and had 17 steals.
Santa Clara 67, Oregon 58
At Eugene, Ore., Craig Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Broncos (2-1) over the Ducks (1-2).
Oregon trailed 30-24 at the half, but used a 15-7 run midway through the second half to take the lead 48-47 with 7:49 left to play.
Santa Clara responded with an 11-2 run to lead 58-50 with 2:31 left to play. Todd Wuschnig scored six points during the run.
The Ducks failed to make a field-goal attempt in the final 8 minutes of the game as the Broncos outscored them 20-11.
Portland 80, UCSB 79 (OT)
At Santa Barbara, Calif., Dionn Holton made a 15-foot jump shot with 1:23 remaining in overtime to put the Pilots (4-1) ahead for good as they defeated the Gauchos (1-2).
Holton’s shot gave Portland a 78-77 lead, and Jimmy Rainwater made two free throws with 51 seconds left to make it 80-77.
UCSB’s Dwayne Williams made two foul shots with 45 seconds to play to complete the scoring.
Boise St. 83, Weber St. 60
At Boise, guard Shane Flanagan scored 17 points to lead the Broncos (2-1) over the Wildcats (0-3), breaking a six-game losing streak to Weber State.
Cal Poly SLO 82, San Diego 81
At San Luis Obispo, Calif., Mike Wozniak scored 22 points to lead a balanced attack as the Mustangs (4-1) defeated the Toreros (2-2).
Ross Ketcham scored 15 points and Chris Bjorklund added 13 for Cal Poly. Reserves Jeremiah Mayes and Jabbar Washington had 11 points each for the Mustangs, and Mayes grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Ryan Williams led San Diego with 19 points and nine rebounds. Alex Parker added 18 points, and Brian Miles had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Toreros.

At Hilo, Hawaii, Matthew Graves hit a key 3-pointer in overtime to lead the Bulldogs (4-1) over the Tigers (4-2) and into the championship game of the Big Island Invitational Tournament.

At Stillwater, Okla., Desmond Mason scored a career-high 22 points and the Cowboys (4-0) shot 77 percent from the field in the second half to pull away from the Eagles (0-5).

Louis Richardson’s slam dunk with 8.6 seconds left gave New Mexico State a four-point lead, and the Aggies (2-2) held on to defeat the Miners (2-1) at El Paso, Texas.

At Murray, Ky., Duane Virgil scored 18 points to lead eight players in double figures as the Racers (4-0) defeated the Bengals (2-2) for the championship of the Racer Thanksgiving Tournament.

At Los Angeles, Derrick Higgins scored 17 points to lead a balanced Cal State Northridge attack as the Matadors (1-2) defeated the Waves (3-1).

At Portland, Jamall Sanford scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Vikings (3-0) defeated the Cavaliers (3-4).

At Hilo, Hawaii, J.R. Camel made the big plays at the end to thwart a determined comeback by Hawaii-Hilo, and the Grizzlies (2-3) defeated the Vulcans (0-2) in a consolation game in the Big Island Invitational.
Camel hit a free throw with 8 seconds left, then scored on a steal and a dunk as time ran out.
Camel’s play helped Montana withstand a late rally by the Vulcans, who came back from a 69-56 deficit with 6:37 left.
Long Beach State 55, Brown 52
At Miami, David Egans’ 14 points led four Long Beach State players in double figures and the 49ers (2-2) came from behind to defeat the Bears (2-3) in the opening round of the La Festival/FIU Holiday Classic.
