Sweden Wraps It Up

Compiled From Wire Services

Tom Gullikson hoped to erase America’s ugly history in this cold, coastal city when he arrived with his U.S. Davis Cup tennis team for the finals, but he wound up with yet another horrible memory.

With Pete Sampras helpless with a calf injury and a makeshift U.S. doubles team helpless on the court, Sweden captured the third and final point it needed to claim the championship, wiping out the U.S. bid for the title after the third match of the best-of-5 series.

Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman and Niklas Kulti beat Todd Martin and Jonathan Stark, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, to give Sweden its sixth Davis Cup title.

Andre Agassi and Sargis Sargsian will battle today for the singles championship of the HealthSouth/USTA Men’s Challenger at Burbank, Calif.

Agassi defeated Daniel Nestor of Canada 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in one semifinal. Top-seeded Sargsian downed Martin Sinner of Germany 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in the other.
