Victory Keeps Eagles On Top In Big Sky

College volleyball

Eastern Washington slipped slightly in the middle going Thursday, but rebounded to hold on to its Big Sky Conference volleyball lead.

The Eagles (11-2, 5-0) outlasted Northern Arizona 15-11, 15-5, 14-16, 6-15, 15-5 at Flagstaff for their sixth consecutive win.

EWU hit a match-high .409 in the final game. The Eagles avenged last year’s conference tournament upset at the Lumberjacks’ hands.

Lacey Coover had 23 digs and 16 kills, hitting a match-best .353 for the Eagles. Kim Exner added 21 kills, Lynn Robison 19 kills and 17 digs, and Kim Maxwell 60 assists.

Cate Weaver, Jenny Treglown and Tami Burchard totaled 15 kills apiece for NAU. Melissa Haugen added 24 digs.

Pacific won a matchup of division leaders, defeating Idaho 16-14, 15-4, 15-3 in a Big West Conference volleyball match at Moscow.

The 11th-ranked Tigers (10-2, 3-0 West Division) finished with a .667 hitting percentage in the final game.

Pacific’s Tracy Chambers, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, hit .650 and had 13 kills.

Pacific coach John Dunning improved his career record to 329-80.

The Vandals (8-7, 2-1 in the East) tailed off after their .275 first-game hitting attack. Idaho led the game 14-13, but lost on hitting errors.

Idaho’s Beth Craig and Jessica Moore had 10 kills apiece. Craig had a team-high .304 attack percentage. Idaho’s Anna Reznicek added 29 assists and nine digs.

Kirsten Krulitz and Lani Kim have left Idaho’s team.

Krulitz wants to concentrate on academics, said coach Carl Ferreira. The sophomore from Wallace played in all 14 Vandals matches. Kim, a backup setter from Boise, asked for her scholarship release.
