Test Your Skills At Valley Fire District 1 Open House

From Staff Reports

Spokane Valley Fire District 1 will hold an open house today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 5, 2411 N. Pioneer Lane.

Citizens can see the equipment and techniques used to fight fires and watch firefighters compete in a competition to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

For a $25 donation, private citizens can try the test course themselves from 2 to 4 p.m. Activities include dragging a hose charged with water, carrying it up stairs, climbing through a window with a 180-pound dummy and other challenges.

For no charge, visitors can sit behind the wheel of a fire truck, tour Fire Station 5, lift a car using only air, try their aim with a fire hose, visit the fire safety house and watch a variety of demonstrations.

A Med Star helicopter will be on hand between noon and 2 p.m.

Fire staff will be available to answer questions.

Eat right, stop smoking

Locking up the boat launch

Gates to the Liberty Lake public boat launch will be locked up for the season on Monday morning by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department.

“The fishing season at Liberty Lake closes Sept. 30, but we like to give people another week to get their boats off the lake,” said Madonna Luers, department spokeswoman.

The boat launch is scheduled to reopen in the spring, a few days before the April 25 start of Liberty Lake’s 1998 fishing season.

Bike safety rodeo next Saturday

The Valley’s Mobile Corral Homes is hosting a bicycle safety rodeo next weekend.

Children can bring their bikes to 15906 E. Sprague between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. next Saturday to participate in the event. Deputy Roger Knight of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to teach bicycle safety skills.

Participants who do not own a helmet will have an opportunity to win one during the bike rodeo. A drawing for a free helmet will be held every half-hour.

“Because head injuries are the leading cause of death in bicycle crashes, we want to promote increasing helmet usage by offering education and bicycle helmets free to those who may not have one,” said Mary Hiss of the Spokane Regional Health District.

Free hot dogs and soda will be served during the bike rodeo. Other events include a drawing for a handmade quilt, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
