‘Timecop’ Takes On ‘50s Stalker In Debut

John Martin New York Times Syndicate

In a new series, “Timecop” Logan (T.W. King) skips back to 1956 to protect an actress from a stalker.

The stakes: Her yet-to-be conceived son is a future U.S. president.

The stalker turns out to be “The Ripper” (Tom O’Brien), encountered by Logan in the series premiere on ABC at 10.

The guest cast features Lucille Ball and Marilyn Monroe look-alikes.

Highlights

“Baseball,” ESPN at 1: Game 5 of the divisional series with Seattle at Baltimore (if necessary). Also, on FOX at 5: Game 5 of the New York-Cleveland series (if necessary).

“Suddenly Susan,” NBC at 8: As we saw in the season premiere, Susan (Brooke Shields) has a formidable rival in investigative reporter Maddy (Andrea Bendewald). But the half-hour’s real zing comes when Susan makes a slip of the tongue in front of Jack’s (Judd Nelson) soon-to-be-ex-wife (Lisa Howard) that lands her in the middle of their divorce proceedings.

“Everybody Loves Raymond,” CBS at 8:30: Droll Brad Garrett as Ray’s brother Robert is one of the reasons the laughs keep rolling in this series.

On the anniversary of his divorce, Robert gets together with Ray and they bond, which turns out to be more than Ray can handle.

“Football,” ABC at 6: New England (4-0) visits Denver (5-0) in what looks to be a dandy matchup.

“Cybill,” CBS at 9: As menopause sets in, Cybill (Cybill Shepherd) swears to forego hormone supplements. But the heat is really turned on when Cybill’s mother (Audra Lindley) shows up.

“Brooklyn South,” CBS at 10: Theodore Bikel guest-stars as a Hasidic Jew who leads a protest against the police after he and his granddaughter are beaten and mugged. The situation is complicated when she mistakenly identifies a suspect who must be set free.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues into the death-in-custody of the man responsible for the shooting spree in the series premiere.

Cable Calls

“The Karen Carpenter Story” (1989), LIFE at 9: I remember everyone being prepared to snicker at the docudrama about the rise and tragic death of the pop singer. But Cynthia Gibb’s performance and a soundtrack featuring original songs make this a better-than-average TV movie.

Mitchell Anderson co-stars as brother Richard.
