Senate Committee Oks Foley Nomination

From Staff And Wire Reports

Former House Speaker Tom Foley’s nomination as U.S. ambassador to Japan was approved Wednesday by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Without discussion, the committee endorsed Foley and several other nominees at a 15-minute meeting.

Foley’s nomination now heads to the full Senate for a vote, where easy approval is expected.

But a vote has not been scheduled, a spokesman for Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., said. Senate rules give Lott control over scheduling the vote.

The appointment likely will be considered in the next couple of weeks.
