SOUTHWEST

Texas 27, Oklahoma 24: At Dallas, Ricky Williams ran 40 times for 223 yards and two touchdowns and Bryan White caught a 19-yard touchdown pass, allowing the Longhorns (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) to hold off the Sooners (2-4, 0-2) despite 291 yards and three TDs from De’Mond Parker.

Phil Dawson’s 51-yard field goal with 4:57 left put the Longhorns up 27-17. It was his 14th straight field goal, a school record.

A few minutes later, Parker went 66 yards down the left sideline to get Oklahoma to 27-24 with 2:42 to go.

Texas, however, ran out the clock for its first win over Oklahoma since 1994.

Texas Tech 17, Kansas 7: At Lubbock, Texas, Ricky Williams rushed for 179 yards and the Red Raiders (3-2, 2-0 Big 12) didn’t allow an offensive score in defeating the Jayhawks (4-2, 2-1).

Texas-El Paso 33, Tulsa 18: At Tulsa, Okla., the Miners (2-4, 1-2) ended an 11-game WAC losing streak by beating the Golden Hurricane (0-5, 0-2).

MIDWEST

Purdue 59, Minnesota 43: At Minneapolis, Billy Dicken tied a school record with five TD passes and ran for a score to lead the Boilermakers (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) over the Golden Gophers (2-4, 0-2).

Brian Alford caught TD passes of 93 and 89 yards on the way to a school-record 215 yards.

Wisconsin 31, Illinois 7: At Madison, Wis., Ron Dayne bulled his way over winless Illinois for 207 yards and two touchdowns as the Badgers (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) extended their winning streak to six games by routing the Illini (0-6, 0-3).

Dayne, who needed a walking boot for his swollen left ankle last week, scored on a 1-yard run and a 66-yard scamper.

Vanderbilt 17, N. Illinois 7: At De Kalb, Ill., Damian Allen passed for 175 yards and a TD, but it took a 43-yard fumble return by Jay Stallworth with 3:37 left to ensure the win for the Commodores (3-3) against the Huskies (0-6).

Cincinnati 33, Ala.-Birmingham 29: At Cincinnati, linebacker Phillip Curry intercepted a pass on the goal line with 43 seconds left as the Bearcats (5-1) defeated the Blazers (3-4).

Miami Ohio 62, Kent 26: At Kent, Ohio, Sam Ricketts became the first player in Miami of Ohio history to amass 5,000 yards of offense and Travis Prentice rushed for three TDs as the RedHawks (5-1, 3-1 MAC) ripped the Flashes (1-5, 1-3).

In other MAC games, Toledo (5-0, 3-0) defeated Central Michigan (2-5, 1-3) 41-10; Marshall (5-1, 3-0) defeated Akron (1-5, 0-4); Eastern Michigan (2-4, 2-3) defeated Ball State (1-5, 0-3) 38-32; and Western Michigan (4-3, 3-2) defeated Bowling Green (3-4, 3-1) 34-21.

EAST

Notre Dame 45, Pittsburgh 21: At Pittsburgh, Allen Rossum scored on a 93-yard kickoff return to start the game and Autry Denson had two touchdown runs as the Fighting Irish (2-4) snapped their longest losing streak in 34 years by defeating the Panthers (3-3).

Denson scored on a 50-yard run only 6-1/2 minutes after Rossum’s touchdown to give Notre Dame a 14-0 lead - its biggest of the season.

SOUTH

South Carolina 38, Kentucky 24: At Columbia, S.C., Anthony Wright threw for three touchdowns and woke up South Carolina’s sleeping offense as the Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3 SEC) defeated the Wildcats (3-3, 1-3).

West Virginia 31, Maryland 14: At College Park, Md., Amos Zereoue ran for 145 yards and Marc Bulger threw for two TDs as the Mountaineers (5-1) defeated the Terrapins (2-4).

Virginia 21, Clemson 7: At Clemson, S.C., Aaron Brooks threw two touchdown passes as part of a second-half outburst and the Cavaliers (3-2, 2-1 ACC) defeated the Tigers (3-3, 1-3).

Mississippi St. 24, NE Louisiana 10: At Starkville, Miss., after not starting for the first time this season, Matt Wyatt came off the bench and threw two TD passes to lead the Bulldogs (4-2) over the Indians (2-5), who led 10-3 late in the third.

Memphis 38, Arkansas St. 9: At Memphis, Gerard Arnold rushed for 119 yards and three TDs as the Tigers (2-4) beat the Indians (1-5).

Tulane 64, Louisville 33: At Louisville, Ky., Shaun King passed for three touchdowns and ran 73 yards for another in amassing 387 yards as the Green Wave (3-2, 2-0 C-USA) defeated the Cardinals (1-6, 0-2) for the first time.

Southern Miss 23, East Carolina 13: At Greenville, N.C., Harold Shaw scored on a 1-yard run with 6:34 to play and Tim Hardaway had three field goals as the Eagles (4-2, 2-0 C-USA) spoiled the conference debut of the Pirates (1-4, 0-1).

Central Florida 52, Samford 7: At Orlando, Fla., Daunte Culpepper completed his first 15 passes and threw for three touchdowns as the Knights (3-4) rolled over the I-AA Bulldogs (2-4).

North Alabama 48, SW Louisiana 42, 4 OT: At Lafayette, La., Greg Manson ran 20 yards for a touchdown in the fourth overtime period to earn the Division II Lions (4-2) a victory over the Cajuns (1-6) in North Alabama’s first game against a Division I opponent since 1959.

WEST

New Mexico 36, San Diego St. 21: Graham Leigh passed for three touchdowns and ran for two as the Lobos (6-0, 3-0 WAC) defeated the Aztecs (1-5, 0-2), setting a New Mexico school record for season-opening victories.

Colorado St. 55, San Jose St. 20: At San Jose, Calif., Moses Moreno completed 13 of 20 passes for 183 yards and two TDs to lead the Rams (4-2, 2-1 WAC) over the Spartans (0-5, 0-2).

Colorado State scored 34 points in the fourth quarter and San Jose State 13.

Southern Methodist 20, Utah 19: At Salt Lake City, Luke Johnson blocked Tommy Truhe’s point-after attempt early in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs (2-4, 1-2 WAC) defeated the Utes (3-3, 2-2 WAC).

UNLV 21, Texas Christian 19: At Las Vegas, Jon Denton threw two first-half TD passes and the Rebels (3-3, 2-1 WAC) edged the Frogs (0-5, 0-2).
