Chippendale Chips In A Pair As WSU Runs Soccer Streak To 5
All three Washington State goals, including two by junior Amy Chippendale, came by way of headers Sunday as the Cougars ran their winning streak to five games with a 3-1 Pacific-10 Conference women’s soccer victory over the University of Oregon.
The winning streak is the longest for WSU (7-4-0, 2-0-0 Pacific-10) since the Cougars won 10 straight spanning the 1990 and 1991 seasons. The Ducks (3-9-1, 0-2-0) are winless in their last eight matches. Chippendale had her second multiple-goal match of the season and third of her career. Her first goal, the game-winner in the 32nd minute, came off a corner kick.
Gonzaga dealt Portland State its third straight home defeat when the Bulldogs edged the Vikings 3-2 in a non-conference match at Portland.
Katie Carpenter gave Gonzaga the lead for good with her goal that made it 2-1 in the 44th minute. The Bulldogs improved their season record to 7-8. PSU is 2-10-1.
Trisha Tateyama scored off a crossing pass from midfielder Stefanie Johnson almost six minutes into sudden death overtime, allowing Seattle University, eighth-ranked by the NAIA, to defeat Whitworth 1-0 at Seattle.
With its victory in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges match, Seattle lifted its record to 11-1-1 and 8-1-1 in conference play. Whitworth skidded to 4-7-1, 4-5.
Kristina Manchester scored two goals and assisted on another and Heidi Simmons also accounted for three points as Community Colleges of Spokane (11-1-2, 7-0-2) downed Green River CC 6-1 in an NWAACC match at Auburn, Wash.
Men’s soccer
Although it was forced to play two men short through most of the second half and two overtime periods, sixth-ranked Seattle (11-1-1) maintained its league lead by playing Whitworth (3-6-3, 1-6-3) to a scoreless tie in an NCIC match at Seattle.
Cory Armstrong scored three goals, all of them in the first half, to lead Green River CC to a 5-0 victory over CC Spokane (7-5-0, 6-4-0) at Enumclaw, Wash.
Men’s golf
Idaho State holds a five-stroke lead with a team total of 295 strokes after the first round of the Big Sky Conference Championships at Blackfoot, Idaho.
Sacramento State’s Robert Hamilton gained the individual lead by shooting a 1-over 71 at Blackfoot Golf Club. Idaho State’s Shane Langstaff is second with a 72.
Eastern Washington and Portland State share fourth place, 10 shots behind Idaho State after the first day of the 54-hole event.
Eastern’s Kyle Kelly is one of three individuals tied at 74. Teammate Cory Hutsell is one of four players knotted at 75.
Women’s golf
Northern Arizona opened up a comfortable 16-shot lead over Idaho State after the first day of the three-day Big Sky Championships at Blackfoot.
The Lumberjacks scored 308, 16 over par. Eastern Washington holds down seventh place with a total of 350.
Louise Davis of NAU posted the top score, a 1-over-par 74, for a three-shot edge over teammate Eleanor Pilgrim. Eastern’s leading individuals, Tricia McClain, Jamie Long and Kylie Smith, each had a 14-over 87.
Baseball
The Spokane Spawn won its second straight game to open the national over-30 tournament, beating the San Diego Tigers 5-3.
Former Eastern Washington University right-hander Jim Olsen pitched five innings of shutout relief to earn the victory.
The Spawn, which defeated the Stockton Payters 11-5 on Saturday, play the Sammie Hanes All-Stars of Los Angeles today.
