Abc To Broadcast WSU-Ua Game

From Staff And Wire Reports

College football

Washington State’s football game against Arizona on Oct. 25 will be televised live by ABC at 12:30 p.m., the Pacific-10 Conference announced Monday.

The 13th-ranked Cougars (5-0) have been on live television three times this season. The Arizona game became a more appealing matchup after the Wildcats (3-3) upset Stanford last weekend.

WSU’s Nov. 1 game at Arizona State has already been picked up by Fox, and upcom ing games against No. 25 Stanford and No. 10 Washington also figure to draw interest.

There will be no live TV for this week’s home game against Cal (2-3). The Bears are coming off a 30-3 home loss to Washington.

Huskies control own fate

Washington linebacker Jerry Jensen got off the plane from Berkeley, off the bus from the airport and raced home in time to catch the last 4 minutes of Arizona’s 28-22 win over Stanford on Saturday night.

“I was definitely an Arizona fan for that one,” Jensen said.

He definitely won’t be this week. The Huskies are at Arizona Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

But Arizona’s win over Stanford was crucial for the Huskies because it put their Rose Bowl fate in their own hands. Since Stanford and Washington don’t play this season and Stanford had the tiebreaker advantage between them - UW has been to the Rose Bowl most recently - the Huskies needed someone else to beat the Cardinal.

Now, if the Huskies win the rest of their games, they go to the Rose Bowl.

“It’s nice to know now that if we take care of what we have to do that nothing can stop us,” Jensen said.

Eagles’ Prescott tabbed

Eastern Washington running back Rex Prescott is the Big Sky Conference offensive player of the week after his 201-yard rushing effort Saturday in the Eagles’ 30-17 victory over Sacramento State in Cheney.

As a result of the win, the Eagles (5-1) climbed to 17th in the ESPN/USA Today NCAA Division I-AA media poll, and to 20th in the Sports Network poll of sports information directors.

Eastern travels to Missoula Saturday for a game against the second-ranked Grizzlies (4-1). The winner will take over sole possession of first place in the Big Sky.

Montana has won 32 straight regular-season home games dating to the Eagles’ 27-21 win over the Grizzlies on Sept. 26, 1992. Portland State’s Mike McCarthy won defensive player of the week honors. The senior end had 10 tackles in a win over Saint Mary’s.

Nine were solo stops, including six tackles for a loss of 34 yards and three sacks.

Montana’s Kris Heppner and Portland State’s Orshawante Bryant shared the special teams award.

Heppner broke a 12-year-old Montana school record with a 54-yard field goal in the Grizzlies’ 48-0 conference win over Idaho State. Bryant returned a Saint Mary’s kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.

Pac-10 players honored

Arizona State quarterback Ryan Kealy, Arizona defensive end Mike Szlauko and UCLA kicker Chris Sailer were named Pac-10 players of the week.

Kealy was the offensive player after completing 21 of 34 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns as ASU beat USC.

Szlauko took defensive honors with six tackles for losses, including three sacks, as the Wildcats upset Stanford.

Sailer earned special teams honors for kicking four field goals in as many attempts, including a school-record 56-yarder.

Penn State fans riot

As the clock ran out on Louisiana State’s 28-21 win over then-No. 1 Florida on Saturday night, thousands of Penn State fans stormed a locked Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa., with one thing on their minds.

The goalposts.

“We’re No. 1!” they chanted.

Florida’s loss and Penn State’s 31-27 victory over Ohio State earlier Saturday assured a No. 1 ranking for the Nittany Lions.

Police turned them away, but the revelers finally swept over to the practice fields and tore down a goalpost and tossed it in the flower gardens.
