Beverly Mayer Four Lakes

Rosary for Beverly A. Mayer, 73, will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Medical Lake. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Mayer, who was born in Lewiston, died Friday.

She graduated in 1942 from Clarkston (Wash.) High School and received her music education degree from Washington State University in 1947. She also received her master’s degree in reading from Eastern Washington University.

In 1947 she married Walter Mayer.

Mrs. Mayer taught school in the Cheney School District for 14 years in elementary education.

She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Medical Lake, the Altar Society, Four Lakes election board, the 303rd Bomb Group Association and the Sigma Phi Epsilon music sorority.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Kathy Johnson of Four Lakes, Kristy Park of Chewelah, Wash., Wendy Steward of Medical Lake and May Kirsch of Colbert; a brother, C. Robert Swanbeck of Normandy Park, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Beulah Porter Spokane

Visitation for Beulah Porter, 92, will be from 8:30-10 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Service will follow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Whittier, Calif.

Mrs. Porter, who was born in Decauter, Texas, died Friday.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Porter was a member of Poet Society of America and was a 12-year resident of Spokane.

Her husband preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, Cliff Porter of Spokane and William Flenniken of Liberty Lake; a daughter, Nola Stezaker of Spokane; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Pugh Spokane

Service for Lloyd W. Pugh, 79, is planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Pugh, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

He served in the Navy during World War II, and worked as an engineer for Burlington Northern and Great Northern railroads. He retired after 41 years of service.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the USS Northampton reunion group.

Mr. Pugh is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lucile; a daughter, Carole Williams of Medford, N.J.; a son, Jerry Phillips of Colbert; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Washington.

Francis Alexander Greenacres

Memorial service for Francis H. Alexander, 81, is set for 1:30 p.m. today at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church. Private entombment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alexander, a 51-year resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He was born in Fall City, Wash., and graduated from high school in Snoqualmie, Wash.

Mr. Alexander served in the Army during World War II.

In 1945 he married Bernice Covert in Snoqualmie, and they moved to Spokane in 1946.

He worked for Ayerst Pharmaceutical Co. as a sales representative for 37 years. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 2328 and Spokane Valley United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bernice; a daughter, Karen Wigen of Veradale; a son, Tim Alexander of Denver; a brother, Clarke Alexander of Bellevue, Wash.; two sisters, Alice Wolfe of Texas and Barbara Clarke of California; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Helen Fisher Spokane

Service for Helen Kay Fisher, 53, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport. Burial will follow at the Newport Cemetery.

Ms. Fisher, who was born in Ione, Wash., died Friday.

She graduated from Cusick High School in 1962.

Ms. Fisher worked as a supervisor at KL Clothing Manufacturing until retiring in 1992.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Fisher of Spokane; and three sisters, Dorothy Hillegas of Pasco, Charlene Heller of Wenatchee and Joy Jones of Spokane.

Clifford Nickell Ronan, Mont.

Memorial service for Clifford R. Nickell, 38, was Monday in Ronan. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Rosewood Cemetery in Fairfield. Shrider’s Mortuary in Ronan is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Mr. Nickell, who was born in Spokane, died last Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Plummer, Idaho and worked as a farmhand and in the family restaurant business in Rosalia, Wash.

In 1990 he married Mary Joistead in Spokane, and they moved to Ronan shortly after their marriage.

Mr. Nickell worked in the Ronan area at Mission Mart, Mission Valley Printing, St. Luke’s Nursing Home and Mission Mountain Enterprises.

He was active in the Young Men’s Christian Association, where he coached basketball, soccer and assisted in the baseball program.

Mr. Nickell was also a member of CAPTS and ABATE and had graduated from Citizen’s Advocacy in Polson, Mont.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Clifford Nickell Jr. of Spokane and Aaron Nickell of Ronan; two sisters, Debi Brynstein of Post Falls and Janet Mundt of Spokane; a brother, Clark Nickell of Spokane; and his grandmother, Edith Nickell of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to any youth program.

Pierrette Gervais Puyallup, Wash.

Mass for Pierrette Gervais, 84, will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Spokane. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Bonney-Watson Funeral Home in Federal Way, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Gervais, who was born in France, died Thursday.

She was a longtime resident of Spokane and moved to Puyallup four years ago.

Mrs. Gervaise was a jewelry maker.

She is survived by her husband, Victor; a daughter, Liliane Maddox of Federal Way; and two granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

Earl Mercer Spokane

Memorial service for Earl Mercer, 78, was Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Mercer, a 40-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He was born in Frazer, Ky., and moved to Moscow, Idaho in 1937 with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater.

Mr. Mercer was an independent grocer who also worked for Safeway, Campbell, Albertsons and Rosauers.

He was a member of the Wandermere Men’s Golf Club.

Mr. Mercer is survived by his wife of 48 years, Norma; four daughters, Marilyn McLaglen, and ZoAnne and Kelly Mercer, all of Spokane, and Patty Litton of Ashton, Idaho; two sons, Pete Mercer of California, Md., and Greg Mercer of Port Orchard, Wash.; a brother, four sisters, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association or the American Heart Association.

Lena Bell Cheney

Visitation for Lena P. Bell, 91, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cheney Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bell, who was born in New Hope, Ark., died Saturday.

In 1942 she moved to Independence, Ore., and then later to Richland. She moved to Cheney in 1974.

Mrs. Bell was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and the Rebecca Lodge.

Her husband, Thomas Bell, died in 1984.

She is survived by two sons, Dorman Bell of Sheridan, Wyo., and Donald Bell of Cheney; two daughters, Peggy Sue Henson of Bellingham and JoAnn Leach of Newport, Wash.; two sisters, Nettie Parker of Dierks, Ariz., and Verdie Seals of Victorville, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Paul Slouka Spokane

Service for Paul E. Slouka, 44, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Slouka, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Thursday.

He served in the military and worked as a machinist for a parts manufacturer.

He is survived by two daughters, Janell and Heather Slouka, and a son, Nicholas Slouka, all of Spokane; his parents, Ed and Ruth Slouka of Spokane; two sisters, Michele Stewart of Spokane and Dolores Doyle of Bothell, Wash.; and a brother, Galen Miller of Spokane.

Stewart Carlson Spokane

No service will be held for Stewart C. Carlson, 89, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Mr. Carlson, who was born in Prineville, Ore., died Friday.

In 1931 he married Angeline Fisher.

Mr. Carlson graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Oregon.

He retired from Weyerhaeuser while living in Cottage Grove, Ore. He had also constructed several homes.

He was a 13 year resident of Spokane and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge.

His first wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; three daughters, Saundra Timberlake of Portland, Melinda Carlson of Eugene, Ore., and Christena Carlson of Cottage Grove; two stepsons, Pat and Michael Mansfield, both of Seattle; and several grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association.

W.C. ‘Bill’ Ells Spokane

No service will be held for W.C. “Bill” Ells, 80, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Ells died Friday.

He graduated in 1934 from North Central High School.

Mr. Ells played the trumpet in bands in the Spokane area.

He worked for Union Iron Works for 25 years as a general superintendent. He also worked for the Dix Steel Corp. as a manager of the fabricating shop and was also a purchasing agent.

Mr. Ells taught drafting in an apprenticeship program.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elaine; two sons, Donald Ells of Post Falls and Marc Ells of Waldport, Ore.; three daughters, Diane Harder and Donna Cline, both of Spokane, and Darlene Shay of Seattle; a brother, Max Ells of Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Jo Bradford of Portland; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
