Cisar’s Game-Winner Ties Record
Marian Cisar tied a club record Saturday with an overtime goal that lifted the Spokane Chiefs to a 4-3 Western Hockey League victory over Red Deer.
Cisar rebounded one of his shots and lifted the puck over a fallen Mike Whitney for a score 3 minutes, 28 seconds into OT. Cisar has scored in nine consecutive games, matching the record set by Brent Gilchrist, now with the Detroit Red Wings.
Cisar scored his league-leading 14th goal.
The Chiefs, 3-1 on their Central Division trip, jumped over Prince George into first place in the West Division. Spokane, which has won three straight, is 7-3 and has 14 points, one more than Prince George (6-5-1) after Prince George’s 3-2 loss at Moose Jaw.
Kamloops, which could have tied the Chiefs for first with a win, lost to Tri-City 5-4.
Red Deer (5-5), which lost its third straight, retained the Central Division lead because Lethbridge was idle.
Ben Johnson and Ty Jones scored in the first period to lift Spokane to a 2-1 lead. Jones’ goal, his sixth, came when Brad Ference’s shot from the right point hit him in the chest and deflected past Whitney.
Kyle Rossiter’s wrist shot early in the second period gave Spokane a 3-1 edge, but the Rebels tied the game on Robert Schnabel’s snap shot at 11:18 and Devin Francon’s wide-open shot less than 30 seconds later.
Greg Leeb set up Spokane’s winning goal by winning a faceoff. Cisar carried the puck into the left corner, brought it out front and went for a tuck shot. Whitney made the save but fell down, allowing Cisar to score.
Lethbridge plays at Spokane at 7 Wednesday night.
