Thomas Hellriegel led a German sweep of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii, finishing the 140.6-mile test in 8 hours, 33 minutes, 2 seconds - the slowest winning time since 1987. Jurgen Zack was second in 8:39:17 and Lothar Leder third in 8:40:29.

Heather Fuhr of Canada took the lead at the 15-mile mark of the 26.2-mile run and won the women’s title in 9:31:43. Fellow Canadian Lori Bowden was second in 9:41:42 and Fernanda Keller of Brazil third in 9:50:02.

Victor Petrenko edged Rudy Galindo in the U.S. Professional Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, Calif. Brian Boitano was third.

Kristi Yamaguchi, the defending champion, beat Denise Biellmann and Nancy Kerrigan in the ladies competition.

WBA welterweight champion Ike Quartey (35-0) beat Jose Luis Lopez in Ledyard, Conn., despite being knocked down in the 11th round.
