Area colleges

Kenny Krestian scored twice as Whitworth tripped up defending conference champion Pacific 3-1 Saturday in a men’s soccer match at Forest Grove, Ore.

Mark Lupton added an insurance goal for the Pirates (4-6-3 overall, 2-6-3 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges).

Whitworth lost its shutout bid at 70 minutes. The Boxers (8-5-3, 6-3-3) were limited to five shots on goal.

Herbert Barbosa scored three goals, giving him 15 for the season, as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Grays Harbor 8-0 at Spokane Falls CC.

Kelly Tift added two goals and two assists for the Sasquatch, who are 8-4 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Eastern Division, right behind Green River and Highline.

Tift broke away on Spokane’s first goal, sending a pass to Barbosa when Bob Balderson came out of goal. Tift’s first goal, midway through the second half, came after Chokers defender Shale Wood put the ball in the penalty area.

Women’s soccer

Mary Bates’ one goal and one assist led Weber State to a 3-1 non-conference win over Gonzaga (6-8) at Missoula.

Bates scored when GU goalkeeper Sara Kinsky slipped after the shot. Bates’ corner kick to set up Celeste Collins’ late goal halted a Zags rally that began when Megan Keaty headed in Abby Wais’ crossing pass. Keaty has four goals, tied for second on the team.

Jaime Day scored 5 minutes into overtime to lift Whitworth (5-7-1, 5-5) to a 1-0 NCIC win over Pacific (3-11, 3-8) at Forest Grove.

Day had one previous goal this year. Stacey Roberts notched her fifth shutout.

Nicole Snyder scored at 77 minutes to help CCS tie visiting Lower Columbia at 2 in a match between NWAACC divisional leaders at Spokane Falls CC.

Snyder gathered in a long cross from Heidi Simmons. The Sasquatch also scored at 25 minutes on Meagan Michelbook’s long pass that Holly Vanwert stopped and one-booted into the goal. The Red Devils led 2-1 after a CCS defender tried to head the ball over the goal and instead knocked it in.

CCS played without Katie Snow, who suffered a concussion in an automobile accident Friday night.

Washington State’s women and sophomore Bernard Lagat of the WSU men both placed third at Arkansas’ Chili Pepper Invitational at Fayetteville.

Lagat was in the title hunt during the 10,000-meter race, but he developed a sideache with 2,000 meters left. He finished in 29 minutes, 21 seconds.

Winner Ryan Wilson ran 28:55 to lead Arkansas to the team title. WSU, ranked 12th, finished fourth with 114 points, ahead of 10th-ranked Oklahoma State.

Arkansas won the women’s team race with 42 points, followed by Weber State (57) and WSU (86). WSU senior Kristin Ritzenthaler ran the 5,000 in 17:31 to place 10th. Deena Dressin, running unattached, won in 16:10.

WSU’s next competition is the Pacific10 Conference Championships, Nov. 1 at Stanford, Calif.

Individual champions Tyson Estes and Amber Johnson led Eastern Washington to Division I team titles in the EWU Invitational at Finch Arboretum.

Estes ran the 4.5 miles in 24:08, 15 seconds ahead of WSU’s Eric Allwine. EWU scored 24, runner-up WSU 47.

Johnson completed 3 miles in 18:32, one second better than Janet Roeller, who ran unattached. EWU scored 36. Second-place WSU tied Gonzaga with 42 points, but won the tiebreaker because its No. 5 runner finished ahead of the Zags.

The CCS men and Whitworth women won the non-Division I team titles. Mike Anderson (25:21), in 12th place, led CCS. Seventh-place Miranda Thygesen topped Whitworth with a 19:34.
