Lc Third In Volleyball
Lewis and Clark secured third place and Gonzaga Prep, despite a loss, landed the sixth and final district spot after Thursday Greater Spokane League volleyball matches.
LC (13-5) broke a third-place tie with Shadle Park by rallying past the visiting Highlanders 12-15, 15-10, 15-8, 18-16.
Rogers (12-6) tied Shadle for fourth place with a 15-9, 15-11, 15-10 win at Gonzaga Prep (7-11).
G-Prep was in jeopardy of tying Central Valley for sixth and forcing a Tuesday tiebreaker, but University (5-13) earned a 9-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-6 home win that eliminated the Bears (6-12) from the postseason.
The Cavanaugh’s Inns District 8-4A Tournament opens Thursday at Mt. Spokane High, with loser-out matches between LC and G-Prep, and Rogers and Shadle. Winners qualify for the Region IV-4A Tournament in Yakima and play Ferris and Mead for seeding. Ferris (16-1) and Mead (15-2) complete the GSL season today with home matches.
At LC, Liz Huntington had the final three kills of the match as the Tigers rallied from a 14-12 deficit, stopping Shadle at game point three times. Shadle trailed the fourth game 7-2 before Michelle Etter’s two blocks and two kills.
At G-Prep, Rogers jumped to early leads in the first two games then rallied when the Bullpups took a 4-2, third-game lead.
At U-Hi, CV couldn’t hold leads in the second and fourth games. The Titans scored eight consecutive points after CV led 1-0 in games and 11-4 in the second. CV opened the fourth game with a 4-1 edge, but U-Hi clicked off eight straight while sealing the match.
Anna Getz had six of her 16 kills in the fifth game as Cheney (2-2) completed a 15-11, 9-15, 8-15, 15-0, 15-7 Frontier League rally over visiting West Valley (2-2).
Kara Weitman added four digs in the fifth game. Cheney needed two rotations and 10 minutes to win the fourth game.
East Valley (4-0) scored five consecutive points in the second game, then fought off a rally for a 15-2, 16-14, 15-8 win at Clarkston (0-4) that clinched at least a tie for the league title.
The back-and-forth second game included EV leads of 6-2 and 11-6, and a Bantams lead of 12-11 after scoring six straight.
Girls soccer
Emily Squires followed up a shot blocked by West Valley’s goal-keeper and scored to lead Cheney (7-2-2, 4-0-1) to a 2-0 Frontier League win at WV (6-7, 1-4).
Kyla Hotchkiss added an insurance goal on a shot to the left post. WV, which starts four freshmen and four sophomores, held the Blackhawks to five shots in the first half.
Cheney hosts East Valley on Tuesday to determine the league champion and top two district seeds.
EV (9-2-1, 4-0-1) defeated visiting Clarkston 12-0 behind Amy Lambert’s two goals and one assist. Cindy Hulett and league scoring leader Malea Schumacher added two goals apiece. Schumacher has 10 goals this year. Clarkston is 0-5.
Riverside clinched the Great Northern League title with a 2-1 win at Pullman that included the first league goal scored off the Rams (11-0) this year.
Larissa Mueller scored her league-high 24th goal and Tracy Koesel added No. 16 for the Rams. Kelly Pritchard’s penalty-kick goal at 65:30 was her 13th in the GNL and the first off Riverside, which has outscored rivals 92-1.
The Greyhounds (8-2-1) secured second place. The District 7-2A playoffs begin Nov. 1 at Riverside, with Riverside against No. 4 Colville and Pullman against No. 3 Medical Lake in loser-out matches.
ML (6-2-3) clinched third with a 1-0 win over host Lakeside (2-8-2) at Nine Mile. Allison Biggs’ eighth goal was the winner, a shot from 7 yards out after Jessi Reyes cut hard on an Eagles defender and crossed a pass toward the far post.
Colville (4-4-3) clinched fourth, ousting Deer Park from contention, with a 12-1 win over visiting Chewelah (0-11). Kami Throop and Serena Erickson scored three times apiece.
Cross country
West Valley completed the Frontier League season with wins at Clarkston’s Beachview Park.
Sean McLachlan finished the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 27 seconds as the Eagles (2-1) took the top three places. Clarkston finished 0-3 in league.
WV’s girls (2-1) swept the top five, with Jessica Ferguson (20:11) on top.
Both WV teams finished second in league behind East Valley. All Frontier teams compete Wednesday in the Region IV-3A meet at Hangman Valley Golf Course.
Wilbur-Creston’s Bryan Marchand and Sarah Harris repeated their titles, and Valley Christian’s girls won their first league title in any sport at the Bi-County League championship on W-C’s Big Bend Country Club course.
Marchand completed the 3.1 miles in 17:03 for his third consecutive league crown. Teammate Mathew Olsen finished second in 17:19, helping the Wildcats to a 27-32 team-title win over Reardan.
Harris ran 20:27 for her second straight title. Reardan’s Carly Shuman (21:20) was second, followed by Krisi Wright (22:00) of Valley Christian. The Panthers’ 31 points topped Reardan (44) and W-C (45).
