Swimming Exec Spouts Off

World Swimming Coaches Association chief executive John Leonard said that major swimming nations might have to break away from the sport’s world governing body over the issue of drugs.

Leonard, who is based in the U.S., released a statement criticizing FINA’s anti-drug campaigns in the wake of world-record performances at the Chinese National Games in Shanghai.

“FINA may have the best of intentions, but these recent Chinese results clearly imply that their drug-testing program is not done well enough to catch the cheats,” Leonard said.

Female swimmers Chen Yan and Wu Yanyan broke world records in individual medley events in Shanghai despite not being ranked in the world’s top 50.
