Lumberjacks Cut Down Griz

Associated Press

Big Sky

The Montana Grizzlies are reeling for the second straight week.

Mike Goldstein kicked a 39-yard field goal with 33 seconds remaining Saturday to give Northern Arizona a 27-24 win over Montana at Flagstaff, Ariz.

“I’m just happy that it went through,” said Goldstein, who was wide right on a 42-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter and had a 25-yard try blocked. “I knew what I did wrong on the two that I missed and I felt that all I had to do was make a few adjustments.”

Travis Brown threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns for the Lumberjacks as they beat the Grizzlies for the first time in 10 years.

“I’m glad to win this game in any way possible,” said Northern Arizona coach Steve Axman, who had been 0-7 against Montana. “Our defense played amazing against a great offense and a great quarterback. Our defense kept us in the game.”

Montana, ranked sixth in NCAA Division I-AA, had one last possession, but ended up well out of field-goal range after a 10-yard holding penalty with 2 seconds left in the game.

No. 11 Northern Arizona trailed 17-10 at halftime before Brown took over.

Brown, who was 29 of 47, threw a 28-yard TD pass to Ray Flores to tie the game with 6:13 left in the third quarter.

Three minutes later, Kino Carson caught a swing pass from Brown and turned it into a 64-yard scoring play and a 24-17 lead.
