Power Defeat Rage

Natalie Williams had 24 points and 13 rebounds as the visiting Portland Power beat the Philadelphia Rage 74-67 Sunday to improve to 5-0 in the American Basketball League.

Katy Steding added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Elaine Powell scored nine of her 14 points in the fourth quarter for Portland, the league’s only undefeated team.

Dawn Staley led the Rage (3-1) with 18 points, and Taj McWilliams had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The game featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes, with the Power taking the lead for good on Powell’s baseline jumper with 3:03 to play.

A crowd of 2,390 attended the game in the Palestra.

Katrina McClain had 24 points and 11 rebounds and U.S. Olympic teammate Teresa Edwards added 22 points as Atlanta beat New England in Hartford, Conn.

McClain was 6 for 9 from the field and made 12 of 15 free throws for the Glory (3-2). Edwards, Atlanta’s player-coach, also had four assists and four steals in the Glory’s first road victory.

Tracy Henderson added 13 points, and Stacey Lovelace had 10. Dale Hodges led the Blizzard (2-3) with 18 points. Kara Wolters had 15 points and 10 rebounds, but was limited to only two points in the final 26-1/2 minutes.

Shannon Johnson scored 19 points and Sonja Tate had 12 points and 13 rebounds as visiting Columbus beat San Jose in overtime.

Tate, who had six points in overtime, hit a jumper with 2 minutes left, then another with 1:05 to go to cap the victory for Columbus (3-2).

The Lasers (1-5) led 50-43 in the third quarter, but fell behind 56-54 on Tonya Edwards’ 3-pointer with 4:59 left in the fourth. Three free throws by San Jose’s Charlotte Smith in the final minute of regulation tied it at 66.

Jennifer Azzi led the Lasers with 16 points and six rebounds, while Clarissa Machanguana and Smith each had 13 points.

Katie Smith added 16 points for the Quest.
