Texas Plans To Can Mackovic
College football
University of Texas officials have reached a consensus that football coach John Mackovic should be fired or reassigned after this season, The Dallas Morning News reported.
In today’s early editions, the newspaper cited two school sources it did not identify as saying officials are in agreement about starting the process to reassign or fire the sixth-year coach.
Athletic director DeLoss Dodds, however, said Sunday that there is no movement afoot to get rid of Mackovic.
But the sources told the newspaper that officials already have drawn up a list of replacement candidates, including Northwestern’s Gary Barnett, Auburn’s Terry Bowden, Stanford’s Tyrone Willingham, and Florida defensive coordinator Bob Stoopes.
The Longhorns are 40-25-2 under Mackovic, including last season’s Big 12 championship. But they have stumbled badly this season, going 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Sullivan to leave TCU
Texas Christian football coach Pat Sullivan, whose Horned Frogs have been through disciplinary upheaval and controversy since 1996 and are 0-7 this year, said Sunday he’s leaving after this season.
Huskies confident, methodical
Week after week since that disappointing afternoon against Nebraska more than a month ago, the Washington Huskies have been rebuilding confidence.
A stunning 10-10 halftime tie at Oregon State hardly fazed them Saturday evening.
In the halftime locker room, there was no yelling, no finger-pointing, just a lot of self-examination.
“We speak a lot of truth to each other,” Rashan Shehee said. “So the truth was spoken about guys, particularly me, running harder.”
Shehee ran harder, for 73 yards in the third quarter, as the Huskies scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the second half en route to a 45-17 victory.
With the victory, the Huskies stayed at No. 7 in the rankings and improved to 6-1 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-10. It was just another of the methodical steps Washington must take until its two big games at the end of the season - at UCLA on Nov. 15 and at home against Washington State in the Apple Cup Nov. 22.

It was delayed a day, but Moses Moreno threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns and Paul Turner caught six passes for 140 yards and two scores as the Rams (6-2, 4-1 WAC) routed the mistake-prone Golden Hurricane (1-6, 1-3) at Fort Collins, Colo.

At Honolulu, Jonas Lewis rushed for 129 yards and the Aztecs (3-5, 2-2 WAC) used a late goal-line stand to hold off the Rainbows (3-5, 1-4) late Saturday.
