Goodwill Games Will Go Worldwide

Associated Press

The Goodwill Games alliance between the United States and Russia is over, and no longer will the quadrennial competition be limited to those countries.

Mike Plant, president of the Games, said Monday the next Games in 2002 probably would be in Asia or Oceania.

One place being given consideration apparently is Brisbane, Australia, where Plant visited recently.

The games have been staged since 1986. The first was in Moscow, the second in Seattle in 1990. Next year’s will be in New York (July 19-Aug. 2).

“The formula and the goal we’re trying to achieve is to find a balance … going back to the traditional games,” said Plant, vice president for sponsoring Turner Sports.

Plant said no appearance money would be paid to the athletes, except those doing promotional work for the games. So far, four have been signed - track stars Michael Johnson, Dan O’Brien and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and figure skater Michelle Kwan.
