Obituaries

Godfrey Sackmann Lind, Wash.

Visitation for Godfrey Sackmann, 77, will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Ritzville, Wash. Service is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lind Zion Congregational United Church of Christ. Vault burial will follow at the Lind Cemetery.

Mr. Sackmann, who was born in Lind, died Saturday.

In 1943 he married Lenora Laib in Lind. They moved to Washtucna, Wash., in 1951 where they leased farm land.

They purchased their own land in 1957 and continued to farm in the Washtucna area.

They moved to Lind in 1980 and retired from farming in 1983.

Mr. Sackmann was a member of the Lind Zion Congregational United Church of Christ and was a former deacon. He was also a member of Adams County Cattlemen’s Association, East Adams County Health Care Foundation, Lind Grange, Washtucna Grange Supply, Washtucna Grain Growers, and was a fire commissioner for Adams County Fire District No. 7.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Larry Sackmann of Spokane and Dennis Sackmann of Ritzville; a daughter, Alice Munn of Pullman; two brothers, Albert and Emil Sackmann, both of Lind; six sisters, Rebecca Krug of Spokane, Ella Biggar of Gresham, Ore., Elsie Overvold of Yakima, Hilda Ruff of Moses Lake, Margaret Jeske of Lind and Martha Wahl of Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lind Zion Congregational Church of Christ.

Verna Broeckel Colfax, Wash.

Memorial service for Verna Broeckel, 70, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Onecho Bible Church near Colfax. Burial will precede the service at 9 a.m. at the Dusty (Wash.) Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Broeckel, who died Saturday, was born in Newton, Kan.

She graduated from Hesston High School in Hesston, Kan.

Mrs. Broeckel taught school for two years.

In 1952 she traveled by ship to Japan and served as a missionary for the next 29 years.

She was involved in the distribution, publishing and selling of Sunday school literature while in Japan.

In 1981 she married Robert Broeckel in Hesston. They moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Broeckel was a member of the Onecho Bible Church, the Dusty BB Club and TEAM Ministries.

Survivors include her husband; a stepson, Ed Broeckel of LaCrosse, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Dellene Burdsall of San Jose, Calif., and Janice Pauls of Colfax; a brother, Arnold Vogt of Hesston; three sisters, Betty Oller of Newton, Dorothy Friesen of Walton, Kan., and Helen Bergen of Augusta, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Bible College of Omaha, Neb.

Richard Hopp Spokane

Vigil for Richard B. Hopp, 77, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Hopp, who was born in Tacoma, died Sunday.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Hopp worked as an insurance adjustor for 36 years.

He was a member of the Magnuson Democratic Club, the International Footprint Association, the Elks Lodge, the Young Mens Christian Association and the Brotherhood of Friends.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Mary Quist of Spokane and Barbara Griffiths of Auckland, New Zealand; six sons, Bryan Hopp of Spokane, Tracy Hopp of Vancouver, Wash., Gerald and Richard Hopp of Seattle, Bruce Hopp of Orlando, Fla., and Jonathan Hopp of Studio City, Calif; three foster sons, Tony Manduley of Vancouver, and William and Felix Gonzalez, both of Miami; three sisters, Grace Nelson of Tumwater, Wash., Muriel Ellis of Bellingham and Peggy Muloth of Trail, Ore.; two brothers, Blaine Hopp of Yakima and Kenneth Hopp of Yucaipa, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

William Eudaley Spokane

Funeral Mass for William E. Eudaley, 67, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Eudaley, a 34-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

He was born in Cerelvo, Ky.

Mr. Eudaley served as a pilot in the Air Force and retired as a major.

He received a master’s degree in business administration from Eastern Washington University, and taught computers and accounting for 15 years.

Mr. Eudaley was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Angela; a daughter, Sandra Baird of Spokane; two sisters, Ruby Russell and Mildred Eudaley, both of Hartford, Ky.; and three grandchildren.

Donald Bruyer Post Falls

Funeral Mass for Donald L. Bruyer, 82, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. George’s Catholic Church in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bruyer, who was born in South Dakota, died Thursday.

He moved to North Idaho from South Dakota in 1993 and owned Supervised Living.

Mr. Bruyer also worked in woodworking and computers, and was a licensed Ham radio operator.

Survivors include his wife, Allison; two sons, Eugene Bruyer of Post Falls and Les Bruyer of Colorado; two daughters, Donna Cooper of Post Falls and Gail Brunmeier of Otis Orchards; a brother, Ronald Bruyer of South Dakota; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

James Hickman Spokane

Visitation for James W. Hickman, 74, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

A resident of Spokane for 51 years, Mr. Hickman died Friday.

He was born in Paris, Mo.

In 1951 he married Marjorie Harger in Boise.

Mr. Hickman served in the Army during World War II.

He was a construction worker for many years, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1474.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Donna Knudsen and Laura Holland, both of Cheney, Ronda Stearns of Usk, Wash., and TinnaThompson of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Sheri Webb of Spokane; four brothers, Wayne, Herb, Robert and Richard Hickman, all of Spokane; a sister, JoAnn Smith of Spokane; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Frieda Anderson Greenacres

Visitation for Frieda M. Anderson, 89, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Haddam, Kan., died Friday.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Auld of Spokane; a son, Glenn Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Carl Zurfluh of Kansas; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Everett Selden Spokane

Service for Everett L. Selden, the founder of Country Homes Supply, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Selden, 84, died Sunday.

He started working at Standard Lumber Company in 1937 and was active in the lumber industry for more than 60 years.

Mr. Selden started Country Homes Supply in 1947. It is now in its third generation of business.

He was a member of the Country Homes Kiwanis, the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Margaret; two sons, Niles and John Selden, both of Spokane; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Education Program.

Alice Adams Spokane

Memorial service for Alice Adams, 79, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Adams, who was born in Kyle, Saskatchewan, died Friday.

She was a 60-year resident of the Spokane area.

Survivors include a son, Dwayne Adams of Spokane; a daughter, Janice Stiffler of Humble, Texas; a brother, George Peterson of Spokane; a sister, Lilly Anderson of Spokane; and two grandsons.

Alice (Spencer) Branting Moscow, Idaho

Viewing for Alice Alverdie (Spencer) Branting, 98, will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Moscow Cemetery.

Mrs. Branting, who was born in Troy, Idaho, died Saturday.

She attended school in Genesee, Idaho, and worked as a cook on a farm in Genesee. She later co-owned a dairy farm and restaurant near Troy.

Mrs. Branting sold her dairy and restaurant in 1946 and moved to Moscow, where she was a homemaker.

She cleaned and painted the Blaine Manor Apartments in Moscow, and played the violin and ukulele.

Her husband, Oscar, died in 1958.

Survivors include eight children, Everett Branting, Mary Griffin and Wanda Rueppel, all of Deary, Idaho, Vernon Branting of Florida, Violet Mae McAvoy, Shirley Tenwick and Betty Scott, all of Moscow, and Raymond Branting of Spokane; a sister, Edna Germain of Vancouver, Wash.; 29 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Elmer Nyberg Spokane

Service for Elmer C. Nyberg, 83, was Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Nyberg, who died Wednesday, was born in Leith, N.D.

He served in the Army in the South Pacific during World War II.

Mr. Nyberg worked for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railway between 1946 and 1976.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

His wife, Ruby Nyberg, preceded him in death.

He is survived by a daughter, Christine Borrow of Ridgefield, Conn.; a brother, Milton Nyberg of Missoula; four sisters, Marie Durheim of Troy, Idaho, Clara Nyberg of Moscow, Idaho, Olive Pearson of Glendale, Ariz., and Ester Shafer of Olympia; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Anna Aspaas Spokane

Service for Anna Aspaas, 97, was Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Aspaas, who was born in Norway, died Thursday.

She lived in Ione, Wash., from 1928 to 1941 before moving to Spokane.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Aspaas was a member of the Sons of Norway.

Her husband, Reider Aspaas, died in 1979.

She is survived by three sons, Ivar and Rolf Aspaas, both of Spokane and Lee Aspaas of Vancouver, Wash.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elmer ‘Tex’ Turner Spokane

No service will be held for Elmer “Tex” Turner, 87, at his request. Private entombment will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Turner, a 45-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He was born in Calvin, Okla.

He owned Turner Sales Company, an industrial supply dealership, from 1958 to 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine; a daughter, Norma Parsons; a stepdaughter, Ricarda Carlson; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Leland Lawson Spokane

Visitation for Leland R. Lawson, 74, will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bowdish Chapel. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Lawson, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Saturday.

He served with the Army in Europe and Africa during World War II.

Mr. Lawson was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star. He was the 12th most decorated soldier in World War II.

He worked for Kaiser AluminumTrentwood Credit Union, which is now Horizon Credit Union, for seven years as a manager.

Then later worked for Spokane Federal Credit Union for 12 years also as a manager.

Mr. Lawson helped established several other credit unions in the Spokane area. He retired in 1985.

In 1976 he married Lois Giasson in Spokane.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Fourth Ward, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Shriners and the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Richard and Ronald Lawson, both of Marysville, Calif., and Roger Lawson of Richland; a daughter, Heather Colon of Sacramento, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Vickie Giasson of Spokane, Sharon McMillan of Kamloops, British Columbia, and Linda Ricks of Benson, Utah; a sister, Loretta Jones of Tacoma; and 18 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Lucille Scholz Steptoe, Wash.

Service for Lucille Scholz, 81, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church of Colfax, Wash. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Scholz, who was born in Colfax, died Sunday.

She graduated from Colfax High School in 1934.

In 1934 she married Robert Scholz and they moved to a farm in Dusty, Wash., before moving to their family farm near Steptoe in 1937.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the Dusty BB Club.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, William Scholz of Escalon, Calif., Robert Scholz of Thornton, Wash., and Randolph and Jonathan Scholz, both of Steptoe; two daughters, Jacqueline Rhoades of New Castle, Calif., and Rosemary Phillips of Steptoe; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Raymond Waterhouse Post Falls

Graveside service for Raymond P. Waterhouse, 77, was Monday at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. Mr. Waterhouse, who was born in Alberta, Canada, died Thursday.

He moved to Post Falls in 1945 from Edmonton, Alberta, and worked as a truck driver for Liquid Air in Spokane (now A.L. Welding) for 31 years, before retiring in 1980.

Mr. Waterhouse was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene and the Rathdrum (Idaho) Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his wife, ElMarie; a son, Michael Waterhouse of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Sandi Anderson of Coeur d’Alene and Cathy Mirich of Spokane; and six grandchildren.
