Lorraine Brandstoettner Spokane

Service for Lorraine C. Brandstoettner, 67, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Brandstoettner, who died Tuesday, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She graduated from Hunter College of New York City, when she was 19, with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

She was the lab supervisor for Spokane Falls Community College for 15 years.

Mrs. Brandstoettner had lived in Spokane for 28 years and was a member of St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Syrian Mission parish, Rock Rollers Inc., the Brooklyn Club, Women of the Moose, Opera Buffs, American Federation of Mineralogical Societies, National Association of Scientific Material Managers and Washington State Mineralogical Society.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Edward; a son, Edward Brandstoettner of Miami; three daughters, Lisa Youngman of Portland, Larisa Kerr of Spokane and Nicole Campbell of Ellensburg; a brother, Warren Connon of Cordova, Tenn.; a sister, Violet Syzmamski of Miami; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Gregorios Orthodox Church.

Virginia Schoenberg Spokane

Vigil service for Virginia K. Schoenberg, 81, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mrs. Schoenberg, a 73-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Marshfield, Wis.

Mrs. Schoenberg worked for The Crescent department store for 20 years and retired in 1981.

She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi parish, Friends of the Poor Clare Nuns, Women of St. Francis of Assisi and the Dirt Doubers Garden Club.

Mrs. Schoenberg volunteered with the Cancer Society and was once selected Easter Seals Volunteer of the Year.

Her husband, Merlin Schoenberg, died in 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Schoenberg of Spokane and Raymond Schoenberg of Manassas, Va.; two stepdaughters, Jeannie Nagel of Lynnwood, Wash., and Darlene McKenna of Port Orchard, Wash.; a sister, Juanita Wilmarth of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poor Clare Nuns.

Jack Nelson Spokane

Memorial service for Jack Clarke Nelson, 74, will be at 10 a.m. today at Spokane Valley Good Samaritan. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Nelson, who was a 21-year resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1941 in Spirit Lake, Idaho.

Mr. Nelson served in the Army and was stationed in France.

He taught at a high school for the physically handicapped in New York State.

His wife, Susanne, preceded him in death.

There are no surviving family members.

Nellie ‘Madge’ Nelson Spokane

Burial for Nellie “Madge” Nelson, 86, will be held at a later date in Harlowton, Mont. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson, who was born in Minneapolis, died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane in 1965 from Walla Walla and worked as a secretary for various banks. She was also a homemaker.

Mrs. Nelson was a lifetime member of Seventh-day Adventist Church and an accomplished classical pianist.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Nelson and a daughter, Roberta Gray, both of Spokane; a brother, Albert Silberling of Eatonville, Wash.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Symphony.

William Shoemaker Spokane

Memorial service for William E. Shoemaker, 86, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newport (Wash.) Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of the arrangements.

Born in Elk City, Idaho, Mr. Shoemaker died Sunday.

He graduated from Cusick (Wash.) High School.

In 1936 he married Stella Stark in Newport.

They lived in Cusick until 1942 when they moved to Vancouver, Wash., where he worked in the shipyards during World War II.

In 1946 they moved to Spokane and he worked as a mechanic for Manlow Freight Lines, which was later known as United Buckingham Freight Lines. He retired in 1976.

Mr. Shoemaker was a member of the Calispel Grange, Machinist’s Union No. 86, Eagles Lodge No. 2, the Pend Oreille Historical Society, the Spokane County Democratic Club and the Jane Jefferson Democratic Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Shoemaker of Spokane; a sister, Betty Guillot, and a brother, Rich Shoemaker, both of Spokane; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Herbert Denny Plummer, Idaho.

Visitation for Herbert “Bert” Denny, 100, will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Denny, a native of Lewiston, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Lapwai (Idaho) High School in 1917.

Mr. Denny was a dairy farmer in Medical Lake from 1933 to 1960 before moving to Plummer. He farmed there until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of Four Lakes Grange, Tensed Grange and Plummer Congregational Church.

His wife of 67 years, Clara, died in 1995.

Mr. Denny is survived by two daughters, Donna Broadsword of Plummer and Dixie Kukuk of North Bend, Wash.; four sons, Jack Denny of Plummer, Dean Denny of Rosalia, Wash., Melvin Denny of Hardin, Mont., and Wayne Denny of Spokane; two brothers, Vic Denny of Virginia and Sam Denny of Montana; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Nadine Cotter Spokane

Visitation for Nadine Alice Cotter, 50, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Cotter, a native of Newport, Wash., died Tuesday.

She graduated from Cusick High School in 1966.

Mrs. Cotter worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center as a housekeeper for the past nine years.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey and Daniel Cotter, both of Spokane; two daughters, Renee and Angelina Cotter, both of Seattle; her mother, Rose Hettinger; seven brothers, Albert, Ashley, Donny, Eldin, Lawrence, Jack and Steve; four sisters, Helen, Geraldine, Joyce and Pauline; and a granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gwendolyn Wilson Spokane

No service will be held for Gwendolyn C. Wilson, 94, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Mrs. Wilson, who was born in Grandview, Wash., died Monday.

She was a supervisor for the accounting department at The Spokesman-Review and Spokane Chronicle from 1926 to 1968.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of Central Baptist Church.

She is survived by a nephew, the Rev. Kenneth Britt of Nampa, Idaho.

Walter Brunner Spokane

Funeral Mass for Walter M. Brunner, 92, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Brunner, a Spokane resident for 46 years, died Monday.

He was born in Trenton, Ill.

Mr. Brunner played semi-professional baseball for several years. He worked for the railroad at a chief ticket clerk.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish, the Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus and the Railroad Clerks Union.

He is survived by his wife, Antoinette; a son, Daniel Brunner of Spokane; two daughters, Jean Place of Spokane and Mary Alice Thompson of Davis, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Joan Springer Osburn, Idaho

Service for Joan Susan Springer, 67, will be at 1 p.m. today at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Wallace. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Springer, who died Monday, was born in New Jersey.

She graduated from high school and attended X-ray technician school before moving to the Silver Valley in 1952.

Mrs. Springer had worked as an X-ray technician in various hospitals and was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational.

She was also a member of the P.E.O., Sixth Street Melodrama and was a national representative for the Camp Fire Girls.

She was also active in various community projects.

Survivors include her husband, Don; three daughters, Kathy Hubert of Spokane, Patty Springer-Hann of Alaska and Dian Griffin of Dallas; a brother, Peter Bands-fay of New York; two sisters, Margaret Hibbard of New York and Pinky Smith of Illinois; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Research or the Sixth Street Melodrama in Wallace.

Rex Anderson Jr. Spokane

Memorial service for Rex W. Anderson Jr., 79, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Burial will precede at the Independent Order of Odd Fellow Cemetery in Rosalia, Wash. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

He served in the Navy as a pilot during World War II.

He farmed in the Rosalia area for 16 years.

In 1963, he received a law degree from Gonzaga University.

Mr. Anderson worked as a trust officer for Old National Bank until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and the Gladstonbury Society.

Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean; two sons, Kent Anderson of Oakland, Calif., and Jim Anderson of Spokane; a daughter, Leigh Brennecke of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Joyce Steinheiser of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Valentine ‘Tiny’ Friedman Sandpoint

Rosary service for Valentine “Tiny” Friedman, 86, will be today at 7 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint. Funeral Mass will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint.

Mr. Friedman, who was born in Colorado, died Tuesday.

He had worked as an auto mechanic for Kaufman Motors and Becker Buick for 28 years before retiring to Bottle Bay on Lake Pend Oreille.

Mr. Friedman lived in Bottle Bay for 25 years and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bernice; a daughter, Helen Durgan of Spokane; a son, Dan Friedman of Oregon; a brother, Tom Friedman; two sisters, Faith Smith and Rose Shotzko, both of Clarkston; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Rita Volland Veradale

Visitation for Rita J. Volland, 73, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Paschal Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at the church with burial to follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Volland, who was born in Havre, Mont. , died Sunday.

She worked in the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., during World War II.

Mrs. Volland, a 52-year Spokane resident, was also a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Paschal parish and Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, George; two sons, Larry Volland of Puyallup, Wash., and Eugene Volland of Veradale; two daughters, Carol Stewart of Otis Orchards and Linda Underwood of Newman Lake; two brothers, Kenneth Gerstenberger of Seattle and Jerry Gerstenberger of Ventura, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Miles Eslick Mukilteo, Wash.

Memorial service for Miles Eslick, a former Spokane resident, will be at noon Saturday at Mukilteo Presbyterian Church. Solie Funeral Home in Everett is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Eslick, who was born in Waverly, Wash., died Sunday. 88, He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and was self-employed for a period.

Mr. Eslick worked in the Spokane County Clerk’s Office from 1973 until his retirement in 1983.

He moved to Mukilteo four years ago.

Mr. Eslick was a member of the Elks Lodge, Manito Methodist Church and Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie; a daughter, Gwenn Boero; and a son, Franklin Eslick.

Edwin Heath Spokane

Visitation for Edwin Charles Heath, 80, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow.

Mr. Heath, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Monday.

He graduated from West Valley High School. He served in the Navy during World War II.

He worked in Alaska in the early 1960s, then returned to the Spokane area, where he was a maintenance worker.

Survivors include his wife, Mavis; a daughter, Pamela Everts of Rathdrum, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Lois Marrazzo of Spokane; two brothers, Cecil Heath of Spokane and Maynard Heath of Butte, Mont.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Dona Olson Davenport, Wash.

No service will be held for Dona R. Olson, 73. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Olson, a Spokane area resident since 1987, died Saturday.

She was born in Douglas, Wyo., and graduated from Douglas High School.

Mrs. Olson worked for Free Lance Court Reporters in Las Vegas and Habitat for Humanity in Spokane.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Mangini of Davenport; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
